DEFINITION -

Is a rare disorder that causes an amino acid called (nutrients) to build up in your body.

CAUSE -

PKU is caused by mutations in the gene that helps make nutrients on the body

STATISTICS - In the United States, PKU occurs in 1 in 10 thousand to 15 thousand newborns.

CHARACTERISTICS AND SYMPTOMS -

Symptoms: Behavioral, emotional and social problems,May include seizures, Poor bone strength, Skin rashes, Abnormally small head

How is it detected? Blood test from baby’s heel done 1-2 days after birth can detect PKU.

BIRTH DEFECT FOR PKU-

It is before, The baby’s body is unable to break down nutrients the baby needs. The Most common birth defect of a baby born with PKU having brain damage.
