First 5 20th Anniversary Family Fun Fest and Advocacy Day in Sacramento

Nearly 200 First 5 staff and partners from around the state gathered in early May to celebrate 20 years of First 5 with kids, families and legislators—and to advocate for policies that support young children and families.

The day started with a rousing speech by Senator Mike McGuire, D-North Coast, former commissioner of First 5 Sonoma County and recipient of a First 5 Champion for Children award. He got the crowd fired up for their morning visits with legislators.

Then, it was on to the Family Fun Fest! Hundreds of kids and families joined legislators in games and activities.

Other activities were led by First 5 staff, like First 5 California Executive Director Camille Maben’s art project, and a visit by First 5 Santa Clara County’s Potter the Otter healthy mascot.

We also had a visit from Sesame Street's Rosita!

Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) kicked off our lunch program, where we honored legislators with Champion for Children Awards.

Then it was time for some group photos with colleagues...

It was an inspiring day of advocacy and celebration that reinforced why we do this work—for our kids, our families, and our bright California future.
