Newsletter 18th June 2021

Headteacher Comment

You will see in this week’s newsletter some great examples of what typical learning looks like at Greenfields. It never ceases to amaze me how brilliant the learning truly is for our pupils. However, it saddens me greatly to know that we are still unable to share this with you in the usual ways, due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. We have always prided ourselves on coherent community engagement and continuously strive to work in close partnership with our parents and carers. But this has been so different and difficult over the past two years. We are optimistic that we will be able to reintroduce more activities involving our parent/carers in September, i.e. Book and Biscuit, Flipping Greenfields, Celebration Assembly, Singing Safari, trips, etc, etc. But, what I can let you know is that we are well under way with organising our end of year Class Awards Presentation events and we would love you to join us; Years 1, 2 and 3 between 2pm-3pm Monday 12th July, Years 4 and 5 between 2pm-3pm Tuesday 13th July. Further details to follow, so do please keep an eye out......

For Years One to Five pupils, you and your child/children will know which class they will be joining next year on Friday 9th July. On this day children will spend time getting to know their new teachers (and the teacher getting to know your child) and this will continue on Monday 12th July. Everyone is very excited about our transitions happenings. Year Six have their own transition arrangements according to which secondary school they are due to attend.

Have a lovely weekend.

Greenfields' Enrichment Returns....Gradually....

Enrichment opportunities form such an important part of being a Greenfields pupil and we have been so disappointed to have halted these due to COVID. This week, however, we have been cautiously booking trips for all of our Key Stage One and Two classes with some of our familiar friends: the DRET farm at Nevill Holt, Wicksteed Park, and even going to Drayton Manor Park. Trips like these help to create positive relationships, boost each classes feeling of community and are great for everyone's wellbeing. We very much hope to return to a full timetable of enrichment for each class next academic year.

We are very lucky to work with some specific charitable foundations that allow us to arrange enhanced enrichment for smaller groups of children. We are delighted that this week horse riding, provided in partnership with the Emile Faure Foundation, has begun again. The stables the children attend is Red Piece Equestrian in Brigstock and the children will have the opportunity to learn to ride and care for the ponies there.

Children learn to walk, trot, stop and jump over small jumps independently

Last week's Solar Eclipse

Thanks to one of our pupils, Champion Cheetahs were made aware of the partial solar eclipse last Thursday. So the class decided to take a look...using a bucket of water to see it as a reflection.

Amazing Science in Year 6

Year 6 investigated how nutrients are transported around the body using diffusion. They created some beautiful patterns with skittles and hot water, as well as learning an important biological process!

Year 6

Gruesome Grendel at Greenfields?

Year Four and Five have absolutely loved learning about Beowulf this term.

Children were hooked by the idea of the monster Grendel being spotted on the playground and found lots of clues to support this, including; bloody hand prints left on the trees.

You will also see that the children have worked incredibly hard in writing newspaper reports. Take a look at some of the incredible writing...

Year Two and the Three Little Pigs

Year Two started a brand new text in their Talk For Writing lessons this week! They listened to the classic tale of The Three Little Pigs and then made houses from different materials. The big, bad wolf (Mrs Green) then came to blow them all down!

Year Two

Sink or Swim

This week the children in Reception have been investigating what material will sink or float. Using key vocabulary such float meaning to rest or float on top of liquid. Sink goes to the bottom. Buoyancy means how an object floats in liquid, if good it floats on top well. Density is how the particles of the object are squashed together. If there are more spaces between the particles then the objects will float. If the particles are squashed together, it will sink. The children had lots of fun investigation and brilliant predictions.

Home School Agreement

As we become more used to our online way of working, we thought it was important to add to our home/school agreement (that you signed when your child started at Greenfields) to include online learning. Please follow the link below to complete this short addition relating to online learning with Greenfields Primary School and Nursery.

Class Code and Google Link

Teachers are looking forward to posting their ‘Flipping Greenfields’ videos this Friday in time for the weekend. Each one is all about next week’s learning, so will get your child prepared for a flying start on Monday. Research shows that children who feel prepared for the coming week are less anxious about school, happier to get up and go on a Monday morning and achieve better than those who are not.
