MASON CLUB SPORTS POST COMPETITION REPORT October 6-8

BASEBALL

Baseball hosted Salisbury this weekend for a conference series. It was a rough weekend for the Patriots as they lost all three games: Game 1 (5-2), Game 2 (7-4), Game 3 (11-5). Mason showed fight in all three games, but it was a little too late. On the other hand, they had great outings by the pitching staff and still put up a good hitting performance as a team with 2 homers from David Mathis and Campbell Harris.

Football

Mason Club Football team traveled to University of Pittsburgh for the annual Fall Kickoff against the #5 Ohio State Buckeyes. Mason went into this game looking to make a statement and also avenge their 30-0 loss from the 2016 season. Ohio State found themselves on the scoreboard first off a defensive breakdown and a screen pass, but Mason was quick to retaliate with a slick one-handed grab by receiver Willie Marrow (7-6). Mason would then capitalize on a turnover on downs with yet another connection from Quarterback Justin Fenical to Marrow deep down the right sideline (14-7). The 2nd quarter was pretty lackluster with Ohio State punching in a field goal before the half (14-10). The Buckeyes would go into the 2nd half scoring on two consecutive drives (14-24). Never far behind, Mason would show just how potent their offensive attack was with Fenical completing passes to Anthony Bedward and Marrow down the field, and eventually finding Xavier Savannah in the endzone (20-24). Mason recorded two more touchdowns by Bedward and Marrow, but the Buckeyes were able to capitalize on their opportunities as well, and kept the lead for the remainder of the game (38-34). Mason’s next game will be against Coppin State on October 21st.

Unfortunately, that momentum did not carry over into their 2nd game against Virginia Tech and they lost in the first two sets (13-25, 11-25, 9-15).
