The golf tournament and other fund raising activities sponsored by the Border International Association has raised a total of $210,000 in funds to the Foundation.
GISD Board members recognized two GISD elementary students for having placed in the final rounds of the El Paso Spelling Bee. Students recognized by the Board and Superintendent Efren Yturralde were Noah Torres, Anthony Elementary, and Destinee Brisby, Desert View.
"Extremaunción"....that's the word that Maria del Sol Nunez-Pena spelled correctly to win the 2017 GISD Spanish Spelling Bee held at Yucca Heights Elementary. Ms. Del Sol Nunez Pena is a 7th grader at Chaparral Middle. Also recognized by the Board were Maria E. Gonzalez, sponsor, and her mother Ms. Nunez. The GISD champion will advance to the NMABE State Spanish May 13 and possibly to national competition to be held in San Antonio on July 15.
Ms. Monica Nunez, Physical Science teacher at Santa Teresa High, was recognized by the GISD board and Superintendent Efren Yturralde for being one of only 35 teachers nationally to be named winners of the Grosvenor Teacher Fellow program. She was recognized for her excellence in geographic education and as a result will travel with other awardees to Antarctica to further develop her abilities to bring new geographic awareness to her students and communities.

Superintendent Efren Yturralde welcomed the family of the newly elected Chaparral district board representative Laura Salazar Flores and her family. Members of her family include Caleb Adrian, Ethan Adrian, Beatrize Adriana, and husband Adrian.
