COP26 #LISTENTOTHEOCEAN A Healthy and Productive Ocean for a Resilient and Net-Zero Future

ABOUT

The 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), taking place from 31 October to 12 November2022 in Glasgow, UK, is an opportunity to move ocean climate conservation up the political agenda and raise public awareness that we cannot solve the climate crisis without ocean action.

We must protect the ocean so that it can continue to protect us.

KEY MESSAGES

Ocean action is climate action:

At COP26, we have an opportunity to pull the world back from Code Red by limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C. To succeed, efforts to achieve net-zero and radically scale cuts in greenhouse gas emissions must stand alongside greater focus on a healthy and resilient ocean as a critical part of the climate solution.

The ocean must be integrated into the climate process:

The ocean regulates our climate and buffers us from the full force of climate change by absorbing our excess heat and over a third of our CO2 emissions. By integrating ocean action into climate action, we can protect its ability to protect us.

Climate policy must be aligned with broader conservation and biodiversity efforts:

COP26 is a vital moment, but it is one moment. We need ongoing, consistent and concerted effort by the global community to align climate policy with wider initiatives to protect the ocean, our greatest ally in the escalating climate crisis.

ABOUT THIS TOOLKIT

The content and information within this #ListenToTheOcean #COP26 toolkit is designed to demonstrate public support for ocean climate action.

The #ListentotheOcean campaign launched in June 2021 at the G7 Summit and culminates at COP26. For more background information about the campaign, please read the #ListenToTheOcean Pre-G7 Briefing.

Using the resources throughout the UN Climate Conference supports the amplification of three policy asks calling on world leaders and decision makers to #ListenToTheOcean.

POLICY ASKS*

OCEAN HEALTH MATTERS:

A healthy and resilient ocean is critical to achieving the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Agreement. Just as the ocean is essential to a functioning climate and lasting climate action, so it must be to the workings of the UNFCCC. A recurring ocean climate dialogue is fundamental to future COPs.

OCEAN FINANCE MATTERS:

Climate finance still falls far short of what is needed to keep global warming within 1.5°C – and only a tiny fraction of this goes to biodiversity and nature-positive ocean based solutions. Just 3% of climate finance is finding its way into nature, with ocean resilience being the least invested in. At least half of climate finance should be invested in adaptation and developed countries must immediately meet the $100bn/annum climate finance commitment.

COASTAL COMMUNITIES ON THE FRONT LINES MATTER:

Action must be taken now, through national climate goals, to strengthen the mitigation, adaptation and resilience potential of the ocean, as well as dependent communities and economies, through advancing nature-based solutions and measures that are biodiversity-positive and can deliver net-zero outcomes.

OCEAN CLIMATE INTEGRATION

#COP26 begins soon! Follow #ListenToTheOcean to help amplify the urgent need for #OceanClimateAction and put the ocean at the heart of the #ClimateConference 31 Oct - 12 Nov #Glasgow #TogetherForOurPlanet #OneOceanOnePlanet

Ocean action is essential for #COP26 climate goals to be achieved. A healthier and more resilient ocean not only helps mitigate #climatechange but can also help us adapt to the changing climate. #ListenToTheOcean #OneOceanOnePlanet #OceanClimateAction

Action across all marine sector industries can contribute to #NetZero goals:

  • ➡️ Stop the destructive extraction of ocean resources;
  • ➡️ End #overfishing and #IUUfishing; and
  • ➡️ Eliminate (or better regulate) #oceanpollution

Ocean action is climate action #COP26 #ListenToTheOcean

The ocean has buffered the world from more extreme climate change by acting as the planet’s largest carbon sink. It absorbs over 30% of our CO2 emissions and over 90% of the excess heat resulting from anthropogenic warming. #OceanAction is #ClimateAction #COP26 #ListenToTheOcean

World’s leading scientists @IPCC_CH @IPBES overwhelmingly conclude that if we don’t take immediate action to tackle the nature and climate crises #TogetherForOurPlanet there will be disastrous and irreversible impacts on ocean life that threaten our own existence #COP26 #ListenToTheOcean

#COP26 is a vital moment, but it is one moment. We need ongoing, consistent and concerted effort by the global community to align climate policy with wider initiatives to protect the ocean, our greatest ally in the escalating climate crisis #ListenToTheOcean

CO2 Emissions

The ocean regulates our climate and buffers us from the full force of climate change by absorbing our excess heat and over 1/3 of our CO2 emissions. By integrating #OceanAction into #ClimateAction, we can protect its ability to protect us. #COP26 #ListenToTheOcean

It is vital that we reduce CO2 emissions to protect the ocean. Achieving the goals of the #ParisAgreement on climate must stand alongside greater focus on a healthy and resilient ocean as a critical part of the climate solution. Every tonne of CO2 counts. #COP26 #ListenToTheOcean

We all depend on the ocean for the air we breathe, food security, resources, trade, renewable energy and the role it plays in climate mitigation. #OceanAction is #ClimateAction #COP26 #ListenToTheOcean

Continued burning of #FossilFuels and the resulting CO2 emissions have led to ocean heating, sea level rise, ocean acidification and deoxygenation. #OceanAction is #ClimateAction - the time for action is now #ListenToTheOcean #COP26

The impacts of ocean damage are rapid and large-scale, already disrupting ocean ecosystem structures and functions across the globe with far-reaching implications for both biodiversity and humankind. Ocean health matters #ListenToTheOcean #COP26

NATURE

Protecting and restoring nature, including ocean environments, through the adoption of the #30x30 protection target and a robust #OceanTreaty for example, is a cost-effective method to provide benefits to the climate, society and the economy #ListenToTheOcean #COP26

#BlueCarbon ecosystems - such as mangroves, seagrass and the #DeepSea :

  • ➡️ Remove and store significant amounts of carbon from the atmosphere
  • ➡️ Help mitigate climate change impacts and are key nature-based solutions

#OceanAction is #ClimateAction #ListenToTheOcean #COP26

Protecting at least 30% of the ocean by 2030 will help us adapt and become more resilient to a changing climate, reverse biodiversity loss, restore fisheries and sustain our marine economies. #OceanAction is #ClimateAction #ListenToTheOcean #COP26 #30x30 #HighSeasTreaty

FINANCE AND ECONOMY

Huge segments of the global economy depend on a healthy ocean. It is vital that we increase public & private finance into ocean management that mitigates further damage to #BlueNature. Ocean finance matters #ListenToTheOcean #COP26

Action must be taken now, through national climate goals, to strengthen the mitigation, adaptation and resilience potential of the ocean, as well as dependent communities and economies. Coastal communities on the front lines matter #ListenToTheOcean #ClimateJustice #COP26

EQUITY AND JUSTICE

#ClimateAction must integrate both natural and social sciences in decision-making to ensure equitable and just approaches. Coastal communities on the front lines matter #ListenToTheOcean #ClimateJustice #COP26

Climate change and ocean damage do not harm populations equally. #COP26 is a crucial moment to ensure that equity is central to discussions and that people-centred conservation approaches are fully utilised #ListenToTheOcean #ClimateJustice

Local coastal communities, Indigenous peoples, small-scale fishers and fishworkers have a vital role to play in addressing global challenges and driving progress towards #NetZero. Coastal communities on the front lines matter #ListenToTheOcean #ClimateJustice #COP26

HEALTH

A healthy ocean contributes a range of benefits to the health of humankind. #COP26 is an opportunity to improve the relationship between humankind and nature, for the wellbeing of us all #ListenToTheOcean #OneOceanOnePlanet #TogetherForOurPlanet

The #COVID19 pandemic has exposed the threats posed to human health when we are out of step with nature. We need climate-ocean action to preserve the health benefits provided by the ocean today and prevent further health threats into the future. #COP26 #ListenToTheOcean

SCIENCE

The science is clear. If we don’t take immediate ocean-climate action to tackle the nature and climate crises, ice melt will accelerate, and sea water will rise and warm to terrifying levels. We need to #ListenToTheScience and #ListenToTheOcean #COP26

Achieving #SDG13 and #SDG14 will secure successful outcomes for both climate change and our ocean. The @UNOceanDecade of #OceanScience presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to drive action to achieve these goals. #COP26 #Agenda2030 #ListenToTheOcean

OCEAN LITERACY

#OceanLiteracy is an important component of efforts to improve humankind’s relationship with the ocean and moves us towards a more sustainable future. #COP26 is an opportunity for global audiences to engage with these issues and #ListenToTheOcean

Reflecting the broader diversity of ocean perspectives to include multi-cultural and spiritual significance of the ocean can help lead to more inclusive, accessible and effective #OceanLiteracy efforts. #ListenToTheOcean #COP26
