Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan had a dream from the time he was young, and his dream has come true, with basketball. In this report, I will answer the following three questions. Who is Michael Jordan? The other two questions are, what was Michael Jordan’s childhood like, and what disciplines did Jordan have to be so great.

The first question that I am going to answer is - Who is Michael Jordan? Michael Jordan is retired professional basketball player. Jordan played 15 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards. A biography about him on the NBA website, states, “Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time." Which is pretty much true. Jordan was one of the most effectively advertised athletes of his generation and was considered pretty important in popularizing the NBA around the world in the 1980s and 1990s because he was just so good.

Michael Jordan is also a businessman. He has his own clothesline and fair share of shoes with Nike. His most popular shoes are the Air Jordan 9, 6, and 13. Most of Jordan's sponsoring deals, including his first deal with Nike, were arranged by his agent, David Falk. Jordan has described Falk as "The best at what he does," and, he is just simply great. He's the one who came up with the concept of ‘Air Jordan’. In 2010, Jordan was ranked by Forbes magazine as the 20th-most powerful celebrity in the world with $55 million earned between 2009 and 2010. According to the article, Jordan Brand generates $1 billion in sales for Nike. Jordan was named the first NBA player to become a billionaire, after he increased his stake in the Charlotte Hornets from 80% to 89.5%. His current net worth is estimated at $1.1 billion, also by Forbes.

Finally, he was an NBA superstar. For example, these are just some of his awards :

Six-time NBA champion

Six-time NBA Finals MVP

Five-time NBA MVP

10-time NBA scoring leader (1987–1993, 1996–1998)

14-time NBA All-Star

Three-time NBA All-Star Game MVP

11-time All-NBA

Nine-time NBA All-Defensive First Team

Two-time NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion – 1987, 1988

NBA Rookie of the Year – 1984–85

NBA Defensive Player of the Year – 1987–88

Next, I am going to answer the question - What was Michael Jordan’s childhood like? Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 17th 1963. He soon moved to Wilmington, North Carolina when he was a toddler and grew up there. He was the third son and fourth of five children. He has two older brothers, and one older sister. He also had a younger sister.

Later on, he went to Laney High School in Wilmington. He was a B+ student. He was not academically focused at all. That is where he really shined athletically. He played basketball, baseball, and football. During his sophomore year in high school, he was very underestimated. He tried out for the varsity basketball team. Even though he was 5’11”, he got cut because his friend Harvest Leroy Smith, was taller than him. Motivated to prove his skill, Jordan became the star of Laney’s junior varsity team. The following summer, he grew four inches, and trained hard! After high school, Jordan was recruited by numerous college basketball teams, including Duke, North Carolina, South Carolina, Syracuse, and Virginia. But he only accepted North Carolina’s invite to later major in cultural geography. The Huffington Post says that that would be his dream job if he never played ball.

The last question that I am going to answer is what disciplines did Michael Jordan have to be so great. The most important one is when he got cut from the high school varsity team. The following Summer after he got cut because his height, he grew four inches, and worked his behind off to prove his worth. Later on, he became the star of the Junior Varsity team (as I said in the preceding paragraph) to prove himself - so that worked. This went along with everything he did in his career - He always pushed himself to the maximum, and practiced as hard as he did in games. A last reason why he was disciplined and great is because he learned from his mistakes and since he was born into a large family, he had to get attention by trying his best at everything.

So that was my report about the basketball star - Michael Jordan. I answered the questions who is Michael Jordan? What was Michael Jordan’s childhood like, and what disciplines did Jordan have to be so great. Thank you for reading.
