What dangers do you see as a person stranded on this deserted island. Be specific and explain your answers.
There could be many challenges with living on this island. One of them could be the northern rocky coast because no boats will be able to enter from there. With this island being in the middle of the sea would be water because most if not all of the water around the island will be salty. This island has many dangerous animals and most of them are not friendly,so watch out! Off the island is a rocky deserted island that seems to be unable to go to because its to rocky!
The kids gather on the island after the crash.
Create a list of characters from the novel The Lord of the Flies and add details about them using textual evidence from the novel.
Ralph-fair (8), 12 years old (10), Arrogant (didn't ask Piggy his name (11). Became the leader of the pack(22)
Piggy- Fat(7), Does not like the name people called him in school(11), Has asthma(9), Wears glasses(8).
Jack- In choir(22), Him and his group become hunters(23), Afraid of killing an animal(31), Understands how to prepare meat(31).
Simon- Always throwing a faint(20), Part of the choir(20), went on the exploration to the mountain (34), wore a cloak with the choir(20).
Sam and Eric- Bullet headed and with hair like tow(19), Twins(19), They were chunky and vital(19), Their profiles were blurred(19).
Roger- Talks about the island in the style of a book(35), Wanted to have a vote(22), Voted for Ralph(22), A slight, furtive boy whom no one knew(22).
Rules of island- 1-Do not kill other people on the island. 2-Do your job/pull your weight. 3-Share resources. 3-Don't go out at night. 4-communicate with others. 5-travel in pairs of 2 or more.
Their are explanations for all the rules. 1-people need other people to survive and to help gather other resources. 2-If a person is assigned a job they need to do it and not let everyone else do it for them . 3-Don't keep all of it to your self because other people may need it to survive. 4-If a person goes out at night they wont be able to see and they could get lost of fall into the ocean. 4-they need to let other people know if they are fine or need help. 5-If something happens someone should know and they could help but if they traveled alone they could be injured or even killed. But overall the most important is don't kill each other because people cant get anywhere with out team work and other people can help you gather and hunt for resources.
THEME- The setting contributes to the theme because it takes place on an island and most islands are not inhabited. On an island people only have what is on the island or what is around the island. People would have have to forge and scavenge for food, water and shelter. When the term survival gets brought up it typically means fighting for it or working for it or to get to it. It takes place in an ocean with is ironic because they are surrounded by water but cant drink it. That maybe breaking some of them. This place is a though place to live.
A rainstorm shakes the island and the kids.
Ralph has said, “This is a good island” (Golding 35). Ralph’s pronouncement will prove ironic; it is definitely NOT a good island. What problems do readers already know about? Explain why these problems prove this is NOT a good island after all.
There are many reasons why this island is not a good island. The first one is one side of the island is a rocky coast so you can not pass it easily. There is only one mountain which means one spot other ships in the distance can see them or the fire. There is only one type of animal that we know of and that's pigs and the only other food is fruit. One challenge on this island is water. This because the island is in the middle of the ocean and the ocean consists of salt water that people can not drink. The thought of a beast is mentally breaking down them
The picture above shows a man looking toward his shadow symbolizing foreshadowing.
Symbols are physical things that represent abstract ideas. The following are some of the symbols from the novel The Lord of the Flies.
1)-Meat symbolizes the temptation the boys face on the island.
2)-Smoke symbolizes the wanting to be rescued on the island because the smoke is used for signalling ships for rescue.
3)-The island symbolizes isolation because that is the setting of the island.
4) The conch symbolizes law and order because to speak you need to hold the conch.
5)-Painted faces symbolizes anonymity because the word anonymity means the condition of being anonymous.
6)-Simon symbolizes goodness because he trys to included everyone and wants everyone to get along.
7)-The platform symbolizes democracy because that is where the people have meetings.
8)-Piggy symbolizes civilization because hes tying to create one on the island.
9)-Piggy's glasses symbolizes survival because they need to use the glasses to start the fire.
Describe the Beast that seems to be stalking the island. Use the text as backup for your info.
The kids have said the beast comes from the water and washes up on to the shore (88). This shows more than one kid has seen the beast. Using the textual evidence the beast must be bug in size because Phil said the beast is moving in the trees and normally are big in size (85).This shows the beast must be bigger than a tree. The big ones have can to a vote whether the beast is a ghost or a beast from the sea (90-91).This shows the story of the beast is getting to him. It looks as if half of the kids believe the beast from the water story and the other half doesn't because the kid's all began arguing between themselves (88).
Name at least two things the boys are doing or have given up that show how they are now operating on instinct and no longer trying to follow the rules of society. Explain your answers with information from the the text.
Jack has given up on the rule of the conch because when piggy has it he talks all he wants (102). They have also given up being one group. Ralph's group wanted to keep the fire going. Jacks group wanted to just hunt and eat meat. Jack does not care for the smoke. Ralph wants to do bother. He believes the fire is more important. Jack does not have the same view points as Ralph.
Two rituals people are most familiar with are weddings and funerals. Pick an event (a wedding or a funeral). Make a list of at least 3 phrases people use at the event you picked. Using one of your phrases, explain why your phrase is helpful in the situation.
The ritual i picked was a wedding. At a wedding the priest starts by saying we are gathered here today. The priest says that marriage is the promise between two people who love each other and who trust in there love. Finally the priest says the love between you joins you now as one. The phrase i picked is when the priest says marriage is the promise between two people who love each other and who trust in there love. The importance in this situation is for the bride and groom to understand they are making a promise on their love. The bride/ groom and agree or disagree. After all these words are shared the bride and groom have a few words to share then they ask if they take each others hand in marriage.
Choose a character, either Ralph or Jack and explain the effect seeing the Beast has on the character you have chosen. Use textual information to support your answer.
The character I chose was Jack. Jacks view on he beast is if they give a bit of each pig kill the beast will not bother them (133). This shows that jack would rather worship the beast than kill it. They do not look at the beast as a threat (133). They see the beast as a thing not a threat. Jack downright says to forget that there is a beast (133). He wants him hunters to not worry about the beast but to focus on the meat. Jack had his first sacrifice for the beast (137). This shows a turn in Jacks character from good to some what evil. At the meeting he believes him and his hunters can kill it (126).This shows confidence that him and his hunters would kill it. When its him and his hunters he believes that the beast shall not be bothered but to feed it a bit of each pig that Jack and his hunters kill (133). This shows the confidence was just a show that he would rather not bother with the beast.
Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph.
Simon was in his cove and fainted because it was so hot in his little place (144). This shows Simon faints easily in hot temperatures. Right before he fainted he was talking to a pig head in his mind (143). This shows that Simon has a overactive imagination. After this scene Simon wakes up to see the pig head is not talking to him anymore (145). This shows the pig head talking was a hallucination and it was never talking. Then he climes the mountain to find that the beast is not alive and its a rotting human (146-147). This shows that there was never a beast that its just a rotting human. After that he heads toward the beach where he meets his demise (152-154)
The deadly waves of the ocean.
In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a person reflection of your own experience.
Groups can help a lot of people but could also hurt or harm them. In the book Jack is part of a group he wants to be accepted within this group. In the real world people may want to help others within there group. The groups also help if the person wants to be hidden and wants not to be alone. Groups rely on each other for protection and for backup. The goal of a group is to get people to come together and help each other out. Some groups may help a person or persons learn stuff and get help.
“Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?”
Using this quote, take a stand. Pick a side and explain why your decision is best on this island here at the end of Chapter 11. Don’t forget to use textual evidence to support your answer.
The better side of this quote is "to have rules and agree...". With the other side of this quote basically says there are no rules that people can do anything they want. The rules is what has been keeping everyone alive. When jack took the other side of the quote two more have died (Simon and Piggy). The hunt and kill part said just hunt and kill and does not mention if they are hunting animals, or people. The rules is what they had but jack split and hunting took him over. If Jack just stayed with the main group things could have been different. There could have been the chance of rescue if the main group stayed together and kept the fire going.
Overall the book lord of the flies was surprising. At first the book seemed good and happy and everyone was okay with each other, i was wrong. The book had dark themes like murder. "That was Simon"-Ralph followed by "That was murder"-Ralph 156. Piggy and Ralph both realize that both were a part of Simons death. The quotes show they did not realize that they helped kill Simon but only knew after they killed him. I picked the picture below because at the end of the book they were saved by a naval officer. Naval officers are normally on warships like the one below. This can be shown on page 200 when he talks about a man with a sub-machine gun.
The Warship picking up the boys.
Letter)- I personally loved this novel. I thought at some points in the novel it was slow and took its time. I best enjoyed the novel when our teacher was reading it. The reason for this was she added suspense and make it a more enjoyable experience. I also enjoyed using adobe spark. I would rather type then write in my opinion. Once again the only problem with the book in my opinion was the story progression was very slow in some chapters. I also feel like some chapters did not contribute to the story much. Even some of the chapters that were filler added detail and made you more attached to the characters.
