Moments that Matter August 2021

Open Door Fun Fest

Our big event on September 6th will honor our DSPs and usher in our new name!

What makes this event so special?

Each year in September, we gather to celebrate our DSPs during National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week!

This year’s event will honor their incredible work, done in the midst of the pandemic, and is our way of giving back for everything they have given to the individuals we support. It will also mark the day when we officially become Open Door and we’d like to personally invite you to help us celebrate both at the Open Door Fun Fest!

Our event will feature free food provided by City Barbeque along with a variety of family-friendly entertainment, including music, carnival games, bounce houses, a mechanical bull and an obstacle course. The festivities culminate with our annual raffle drawing, where DSPs will have the chance to win prizes like TVs, grills, and electronics!

“We’re excited to invite the community to help celebrate these heroes who inspire so many life journeys. Their impact is enormous. We wouldn’t be able to serve others effectively without the passion, work ethic, and resilience of our DSPs.” - Becky Sharp

Fishing With Friends

Our popular event will host its final gathering of the season on August 16th

It's easy to see why Fishing with Friends is such a hit. It's fun for everyone to spend time outdoors, have some friendly competition, and make great memories. But more than anything, this event is about bringing people together and cheering each other on.

At our most recent Fishing with Friends, nearly every person in attendance caught at least one fish, and Dan led everyone with his haul of eight in under an hour!

Next Monday, August 16th will be our final Fishing with Friends event of the season! So put up the "Gone Fishing" sign, grab your pole and join us for another day of fishing fun!

Bait and tackle will be provided, and a limited number of fishing poles will be available for use. Volunteers and staff will be there to assist with any needs and provide companionship during the event.

This event is open to all individuals supported by Open Door! If you’d like to participate, please sign-up here!

We hope to see you there!

On The Go With UCO

Our On The Go group has meant a lot for staff and individuals in Union County.

We've had to overcome lots of changes this year as a team and modify how services are being provided to our individuals. On The Go is getting out into the community and giving the individuals we support in Union County opportunities to do things they have wanted to do but wouldn’t have the means to do otherwise.

The goals for our group are to get to know individuals and staff better, go places that share in the group’s interests, fellowship with our friends, experience new things, and have fun!

So where have we visited? A lot of places! Some of our stops in the past month have included the Union County Fair, Malabar Farms, and Marmon Valley Farms! We look forward to continuing to support individuals at UCO in whatever ways we can!

We can't wait to see where they'll visit next!

Open Door Art Studio Re-Enters Festival Scene

The Crafin' Outlaws Pop-Up Market is the latest opportunity for the artists we support

We’re thrilled that Open Door Art Studio has been accepted to take part in the ongoing Craftin' Outlaws Pop-Up Market at the Columbus Museum of Art! This market is a Columbus staple that unites arts organizations, individual artists, and crafting enthusiasts!

Craftin’ Outlaws is the largest fair and longest running of its kind in Ohio, and is now in its 16th year as an annual ‘alternative’ craft fair in Columbus.

Their mission is to expose the public to an alternative to mass-produced products and to support local independent artists, crafters, and designers. It’s THE place to be whether you’re a vendor or a shopper.

Open Door Art Studio will host on September 25th from 10am-3pm. We will have a social media takeover on the Craftin' Outlaws account on September 15th and 16th, so feel free to follow along!

We’re excited for all the "makers" we support who are participating in the event! Great job!

Pam Aims To Own Her Own Business

Cultivate circles are all about creating a visual representation of what an individual wants: their goals from the big to the small, from the broad to the specific, along with the ways we can support them in achieving their goals. It goes hand-in-hand with our organization’s vision to “cultivate valued roles for all people.”

Pam’s number one goal is to have her own crafting business, and her cultivate circle helped map out how she will reach her goal! So far, she’s checked out books on how to open your own business, bought shipping supplies, and even got a file folder to keep her business receipts. She is well on her way, and we know she will achieve her goal!

We are so proud of you, Pam! We can’t wait to see your thriving crafting business!

Chris Enjoys "Best Vacation Yet" With Staff

Chris recently enjoyed a long-awaited vacation to his hometown of Sandusky, Ohio!

He was thrilled to have Awa join him to provide support and help him feel comfortable on his trip. They were able to enjoy the attractions at Cedar Point and eat some fresh seafood caught from Lake Erie. Chris even got a new piercing and tattoo--something he'd been saving up a long time for!

Chris stated that this was his “best vacation yet!”

We’re so happy that our staff helped make this time of fun and relaxation possible!

Shayne Is Making A Difference

Shayne recently began volunteering with the Madison County Humane Society! She's started by learning the basics, including feeding, walking, putting on harnesses, and socializing with the animals.

Her instructor, Cindy, showed her the ropes and helped her get started on this new journey. Shayne has had a great time so far and is looking forward to continuing to help animals with the Humane Society!

Thank you for giving back to the community, Shayne!

Cooking Up Something New

The new cooking class at CAC has been making tons of delicious treats this month! So far, they've mastered pizza, burgers, root beer floats, pigs in a blanket, fried pickles, and tacos!

The group has a blast during each of the weekly cooking classes, and they continue to participate more and more each week!

We're proud of your cooking accomplishments! Save us a taco or two next week!

Addison Butin

Park West Court Apartments

Addison's passion to help people started early in her life. She's now worked in the DD field for over 2 years, and she's thankful she was referred to Open Door and applied for her current position.

Addison inspires life journeys by participating in community outings and ensuring individuals we support have the best experience possible. She wants others to view her as a trustworthy, reliable worker.

"I like that working for Open Door gives me purpose. There is nothing better than going home with a smile because I was able to make someone else smile." -Addison

We are so happy to have you on our team, Addison!

Volunteer Spotlight

Special thanks to Richard Sharp for volunteering his expert fishing advice with all the folks we support for our Fishing with Friends event!

Also, thank you to our maintenance team who transported all the gear and baited more hooks that we can count!

Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

We would like to extend a warm congratulations to our Employees of the Month! The following employees have been chosen by members of the Open Door Advocacy Group for living out our mission, vision, and core values in their work:

Michael Delay: "I was out in the community with an individual in my car and had a flat tire. Mike and Matt came and saved us. I really appreciate them. They are great guys!" -Kelli
Margaret Beck: "Margaret always looks out for the DSPs when assisting them with their time, schedule changes, and also with new hire training. Even though she has a busy schedule and deadlines to meet she always makes time for the DSPs. You are a rock star, Margaret!" -Kim
Jakairion Spikes: "Jay is kind to everyone even on a bad day. He makes us all smile and goes above and beyond in every way possible." -Valeri

Thank you Abraham for being a team player!" -Gretchen
