MAROON MADE Volume 1, Issue 5 Sept 18-25 2017 Recap & LOOKING AHEAD

It was a GREAT week to be a Maroon, with victories by football, volleyball, women's soccer, men's soccer, women's tennis and men's tennis.

FIRST-WIN FEELS

UChicago Football captured its first victory of the year in a dominating performance at Illinois College Saturday, topping the Blueboys 28-7 in Jacksonville, Ill.

SEPT. 23 RESULTS : UCHICAGO 28, ILLINOIS COLLEGE 7

  • Chandler Carroll rushed for 142 yards on 31 carries and ran for two touchdowns.
  • The Maroons more than doubled the Blueboys in total offense, 405-182.
  • Dante Nepa led the receiving corp with four catches for 72 yards and a TD.
  • The Maroons defense, which held IC to just nine first downs, was led by Ryan Montgomery with 10 tackles and Jackson Ross added seven.
Trevor Anderson recorded four catches for 31 yards in Saturday's win.
Chandler Carroll had his best game of the season with 142 yards and two touchdowns.
Rookie Ryan Montgomery led the Maroon defense with 10 total tackles, including one for loss.

VOLLEYBALL

The UChicago Volleyball team had a fantastic weekend at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament, sweeping the field with a 4-0 record and defeating two ranked opponents in #25 Cornell and #8 Millikin.

BIG-TIME WEEKEND

The Maroon Volleyball team, who is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Division III Coaches' Poll, had a huge weekend in Bloomington, recording a perfect 4-0 record with wins over #8 Millikin and #25 Cornell. Overall, UChicago is 11-3 on the year.

TENNIS

Freshman Claire Handa and sophomore Marjorie Antohi (right) played their way into the ITA Central Region singles final after strong performances over the weekend. The two faced off at Stagg Courts Sept. 25 and Handa came out top in a thriller, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).

WOMEN'S TENNIS

UChicago Women's Tennis opened last week with a 9-0 sweep over Augustana and then headed to Oberlin, Ohio, for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional.

Claire Handa and Marjorie Antohi battled their way through the ITA singles bracket and advanced to the final, hosted at Stagg Courts Sept. 25. Handa edged Antohi in a gritty match, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).

Estefania Navarro advanced into Saturday's Round of 32 after opening the ITA Tournament with a straight-set win in singles against Washington-St. Louis.
Alyssa Rudin won her first two singles matches at the ITA Central Regional before falling in the Round of 16.

MEN'S TENNIS

UChicago Men's Tennis opened the 2017-18 season with the two-day Western Michigan Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich., Sept. 23-24.

Maroons senior Luke Tsai won two singles matches against NCAA Division I opponents at the WMU Invite.

UNDEFEATED

The Maroons have been nearly unstoppable as of late, winning all eight of their games by at least two goals. With #1 Washington-St. Louis's 2-2 overtime draw against Wheaton Saturday, the Maroons have a shot at taking the No. 1 spot in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division III national poll.

#2 UChicago Women's Soccer remained undefeated with two big wins last week, topping Carthage (7-1) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh (3-0) to improve to 8-0 on the year.

Hanna Watkins netted the game-winner in the Maroons' 3-0 win at Oshkosh, netting her fourth score of the year in the 16th minute. The Maroons would add goals in the 83rd and 87th minutes to put the game away late on the road.
Rookie Casey Jervier was one of SEVEN different players to score in the Maroons' 7-1 win over Carthage Sept. 20.

Senior Caroline Olivero, who netted the game-winner against Carthage, was last week's WAA Athlete of the Week.

MEN'S SOCCER

ALONE AT THE TOP

The UChicago Men's Soccer Team, who now owns the No. 1 ranking in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III national poll, remained unbeaten with two wins last week, topping Wheaton (1-0) and Elmhurst (3-1) to improve to 8-0.

Max Lopez continued his scoring tear, netting the game-winner in a 1-0 victory at Wheaton and then adding another score in the Maroons' 3-1 win over Elmhurst. Lopez now has 10 goals through eight games.
Sam Drablos scored twice to help the Maroons hold off Elmhurst at home Saturday, 3-1.

Nate Johnson was tabbed the UAA Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week last Monday for the Maroons after two shutout wins over Aurora and #19 Loras.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Maroon men's and women's cross country teams were off last weekend after foregoing the Brissman Lundeen Invitational due to the extreme temperatures last Friday.
