Intent to Return

As a School of Choice with limited seats, all families must complete an Intent to Return each year to ensure their student's slot for the following year. Families not completing this form by February 28th will not have a guaranteed slot at JPEC for the 2020-2021 school year, and will have to reapply as new students. We've digitized the form to make it as easy as possible to complete. Please see the front desk if you have any questions.

Winter Coats

JPEC has purchased a large coat rack for students to hang their bulky coats, instead of trying to fit everything in their lockers. It is located inside the storage room near the office. Please encourage your students to utilize it during the cold months. Thank you!

Parents, Please Talk to Your Students About...

Tardies: JPEC teachers and administrators saw a very high number of tardies during Term 1. To reduce this, we have instituted a policy that states that student who have three cumulative tardies in one week will lose their brain breaks the following Monday. This has helped a lot in getting students to class on time, but we can still do better. The vast majority of these tardies are happening in the CP building, not with students who need to walk to the Fieldhouse or JW Hall. Especially with the weather, teachers have been lenient with students traveling back and forth, within reason.

Dress Code: Please remind students that hoodies of any kind are not allowed Mon-Thurs. Only JPEC hoodies are allowed on Fridays. We are having a lot of students having to leave class for dress code reasons, which results in a tardy. Often, students will be identified for dress code by one teacher and remove the non-dress code item (like a hoodie), only to put it back on during the next break and have to leave class again when they are identified for dress code by their next teacher. This should not be happening and results in a large cumulative amount of lost learning time. Please review the dress code with your student to ensure it is being followed. Students who need to leave class to put a dress code item in their locker, or change their clothes, receive a tardy each time.

Trash at Lunch: Students are getting a bit lackadaisical about picking up after themselves at lunch. More and more, food and trash is left on the tables and on the floor. We don't mind doing a general pick up after students, but feel strongly that students can do a better job at being mindful of what they are leaving behind.

CP3 Career Center Visit-To Be Rescheduled

The Career Center visit planned for Thursday February 6th, will be rescheduled. More information will be shared when it is received.

On this visit our students will have the opportunity to visit four programs at the Career Center, allowing students to see several different fields of study. JPEC students have the opportunity to attend a program at the Career Center during their junior and senior years of high school and this visit gives students a chance to see available programs.

Bodyworks Exhibit Fieldtrip

On Friday, April 10th, Ms. Shirk will be taking anyone interested to the Grand Rapids Public Museum to view the BodyWorlds exhibit.

Ms. Shirk is offering an optional field trip for all JPEC students to visit the Grand Rapids Public Museum and see the incredible BodyWorlds exhibit that is now on display. This is a rare opportunity to see an incredible display of real, whole and partial body specimens that have been preserved in incredible displays designed to allow visitors to better understand their own everyday motions and activities. Please be advised that some may feel a bit unnerved by the displays; this field trip is encouraged for those who are interested in and comfortable with learning more about human anatomy.

For more information on BodyWorlds, please visit:

https://bodyworlds.com/exhibitions/human/

Students enrolled in Medical Illustration are encouraged to attend, but CP and EC students who are interested are welcomed to join. A mandatory informational meeting will take place on Friday, March 20th from 4:00-4:30 in room 158. Any student who is interested must bring a parent or guardian to the meeting.

All students will need to be driven by a parent or approved chaperone. Unfortunately, transportation is not able to be provided by the school. We will leave JPEC at 8:00 am and will return by approximately 5:00 pm.

Students should dress in school-appropriate attire. No backpacks are permitted in the museum. Photographs of the exhibit are not permitted.

Students and parents may bring food to eat in the car, or may bring money to purchase lunch with their chaperone in Grand Rapids after visiting the museum. Food and drink are not permitted in the museum.

Please contact Ms. Shirk with further questions. sarah.shirk@jacksonpec.org

Interested in Going to Europe?

Interested in travelling to Europe in the spring of 2021? Students will earn college credit while seeing first hand great works of art and architecture in London, Paris, Florence, and Rome! Enrollment in this tour will be closing at the end of February. If you are interested, please contact Ms. Shirk at sarah.shirk@jacksonpec.org.

Contact Information Updates

Is your family moving? Do you have a new phone number or email address? Is someone else going to be picking your child up from school? These are common changes that occur, but we often forget to keep the school updated when they do! Please take a moment to verify your contact information in PowerSchool, and let the office know if anything needs to be updated. We'd be happy to help!

Please Dress for the Weather!

With the weather very cold, it is important that students come to school prepared. Many walk over to Justin Whiting Hall or the Fieldhouse for class, and it has been raining and snowing a lot lately. A warm jacket, boots, hats and mittens would be very beneficial for students to have on hand daily. Please consider sending these items with your student. It would be a great idea to mark your students items with their name and phone number, in case they get lost. Thank you!

JPAC Updates

Turkey Bowl Reboot: The Parent Advisory Committee is working on a family-friendly event during Term 2 to have the opportunity to come together as a community and raise funds to support the 6th grade trip to the YMCA Storer Camp. Stayed tuned to future NftPs for dates, times, and details.

Upcoming Community Engagement Events

School Day/Office Hours/Phone Number

Please note that the school day hours have changed slightly. We still begin at 9:00 a.m., but our day concludes at 3:55 p.m. this year instead of 4:30 p.m. The office will be open daily at 7:30 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m. Please be sure to have students picked up prior to the office closing. The new number to the EIC is (517)760-JPEC.

Lunches

Please ensure students are bringing healthy choices in their lunches daily. We have noticed that many students are bringing items like candy and bottles/cans of soda pop, which are full of sugar and caffeine, and tend to have an adverse effect on the learning atmosphere in the classroom during the afternoon. Please consider sending water, or flavored water in place of soda. Not only will it be beneficial for the students, it will cut down on stains and ants that result from spills. Thank you so much for your consideration!

Lost & Found

Please have your student check the table in the entryway for items they have misplaced. Items are really starting to stack up! Things that go unclaimed for a significant amount of time will be donated. Thank you!

Dress Code for 2019-2020

Cell Phones In Class

Just a reminder to all CP students and families: cell phones are not permitted in class. You may check your phones during recess or at lunch, but they must remain off or on silent and in lockers during class time.

Student Absences

Parents: Please be sure to call the front office as soon as possible in the morning if your child is ill and is going to be absent. It is important for us to be able to keep accurate attendance records, and this will help! The office phone # is 760-JPEC. If your student is absent due to a medical or dental appointment, please bring a doctor's note so we can excuse the absence. Thank you!

CP1 YMCA Camp Information

Each year, JPEC sends all CP1 students to the YMCA Camp. It's a great opportunity for our young Falcons to learn, explore and bond as a team.
