What is the European Union?

What is the European Union? The E.U. is a politic economic union made up of 28 countries that operates through a hybrid system of supranational and intergovernmental decision-making

Why did 28 countries come together?

The European Union came together after World War 2. The aim was to end the frequent and bloody wars between neighboring countries. In 1950 six European countries came together to create the Union. (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and Holland)

Through out time the EU has grown and has added more and more countries. The most recent were Croatia in 2013 and Romania with Bulgaria in 2007.

What other international organizations do Portugal belong to?

Portugal does not only belong to the E.U. It also is apart of an other organazation called the United Nations (UNO).

The United Nations (UNO) is an international organization that promote international co-operation.

The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.

Apart of UNO there are many other organizations, one of those is called UNICEF.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is a UNO program headquartered in New York City that provides humanitarian and development assistance to children and mothers in developing countries. It's a member of the United Nations Development Group.

Another sub-group in the United Nations is the FAO.

The FAO helps eliminate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable, reduce rural poverty enable inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systemsIncrease the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises.

On the flag of the European Union there is 12 stars. But what are the meaning of those stars? The stars on the flag are a symbol of Unity.
