Although Tobymac is known as a rapper, his writing is also considered as poetic."Ill-M-I" is one of his songs which contains many figurative languages.

"Flow like the Cassius, swing like the Clay" This line is a simile and somewhat of a allusion. It is comparing the flow and swing to Cassius Clay. Cassius Clay was the former name of famous boxer Muhammad Ali.

"Transmit 'n throwin' fits 'n paparazzi like zits" This is a simile because he is comparing the annoying paparazzi like zits. When someone has zits on their face, it can get annoying with them just like paparazzi following you everywhere.

"I do windows (on school days) spill Jim Jones (type kool-aid)" This is an allusion because he is making a reference to the people's temple which was founded by Jim Jones. The "type kool-aid" line was the reference to the mass suicide of Jonestown. Many people had consumed what was a grape flavor that was poisoned. They force to drink it by Jim Jones.

"One day, I'm'a make the whole world pay with k.o.'s and okay we bash clots-n-dot-dash" This is a Hyperbole. The author is claming he is going to pay back the earth with knockouts. In reality, the author can't knockout the earth because it is physically impossible to do so.

Student's opinion: The reason I picked Tobymac as my poet because listening to his songs inspires me to countine to write poems myself. His lyrics contain inspiration for people who are religious or don't considered themselves religious. He had a moments of depression, but would always releases albums or songs because he said " It keeps the connection with god". In this world of cruelty and heartbreak, I would listen to Tobymac to keep my spirit up.
