Autism

Autism is a disease that begins in very early brain development and impacts your nervous system. For the 10s of millions of people around the world that have autism their symptoms vary widely on the Autism spectrum. But, all people with Autism have varying degrees of difficulty communicating with others ( with diagnosis required ).

Autism was first discovered in 1943 by Eugene Bleuler while studying 11 children. Eugene Bleuler later coined the term ¨ Autism ¨. In 2013 we finally put all the subgroups of Autism into one ( or just Autism ). Today scientists are working to solve the problems faced by people with Autism.

People with Autism face various challenges. For example, the disease cannot be cured and can be lifelong. Also, they face difficulties socially and more directly communicating.One third are non verbal.Lastly, they can experience repetitive behavior. Though, 40 percent of people with Autism have above average intelligence.

In our local area Warren and Washington ARC works to help people with Autism and others with intellectual and developmental disorders. One of their main services is day habilitation including activities like continued education, learning new skills, getting involves, and having a more social life. Another service they offer is Medicaid service coordination giving people with developmental disabilities a service coordinator, someone who advocates for the life plan.

The NAA ( National Autism Association ) is to fix the main problems within the Autism community nationwide. The association offers the helping hand service, giving grants to families with Autism.
