Social Media on Campus

Want to know what's going on around campus? Looking for the latest scoop on all things Edinburgh Napier and beyond? We have you covered!

Follow us on social media to keep updated and to learn a little more about the people who make up the #EdNapier community.

Parking amnesty

With the majority of you either starting or returning next week, we have a campus car parking amnesty in place.

You require a permit to park on campus. From 16 September, we’ll revert to the usual permit-only parking.

Cars parked without a permit will have the following note issued:

Edinburgh Napier University operate registered onsite parking. This vehicle is parked illegally on Edinburgh Napier University property. Be advised that, in accordance with the University Parking policy, any future violations may warrant a parking charge being served on the driver of this vehicle.

For further details, please contact Security Control on 0131 455 6119. Alternatively, you can email car.parking@napier.ac.uk.

Following this, if you continue to park you will receive a ticket as per the University’s Parking Policy.

We understand that parking can be tight, especially at Sighthill campus, during the busy Trimester 1. If you park in our surrounding communities, please try to be considerate by making sure you are not blocking entrances or exists, parking on pavements or obstructing residents’ driveways. Help us be a good neighbour to the people we share our community with and take extra care when deciding where to leave your car.

If you’re looking for different ways to travel – why not leave the car at home and jump on the tram or bus? We’ve also got secure bike storage facilities if you want to try cycling in. For more information on alternative ways of getting to campus, view our Travel Map or email environment@napier.ac.uk.

What is AppsAnywhere?

Like an app store, AppsAnywhere is a web based tool which delivers the software you use for studying, on demand, across the University’s libraries and computer suites, whenever and wherever you need it. The majority of the University software applications are available via AppsAnywhere.

When you log in you will be presented with the applications. They are listed alphabetically, categorised by School/subject and you can even search the hundreds of applications to create your own favourites list.

How do I access AppsAnywhere?

There are several ways of accessing AppsAnywhere from an Edinburgh Napier managed Windows desktop:

  • When you log on to an Edinburgh Napier managed Windows desktop or open a new web browser session AppsAnywhere will open automatically
  • It can also be loaded by clicking on the AppsAnywhere icon from either the Windows Start Menu or Desktop.
  • You can also type the following web address into any web browser address field: https://apps.napier.ac.uk/sso

Where can I find out more?

The following video provides an overview of AppsAnywhere: Introduction to AppsAnywhere. For AppsAnywhere FAQs search for "AppsAnywhere" on askNapier and for further information contact the IS Service Desk in the first instance.

Starting university can mean some significant life changes - making new friends, studying in a new town, going out to new places and living independently for the first time. However, some of these changes could also increase your risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Going out this weekend for #Freshers2019?

#BeLikeSam and be sure to plan your night out including how to get home, take your mobile phone with you and make sure it’s charged.

Police Scotland have highlighted some other simple steps to help protect yourself, your property and above all keep safe. #belikesam

To ensure you start university in the safest way possible Police Scotland have created some Student Safety information. Make sure you check it out!

Are you a new student?

Is this your first time at University? Do you know if your vaccinations up to date?

Before you come to university it is really important that you check with your GP that your vaccinations are up to date. There are two highly recommended vaccinations that new students should ensure they get prior to starting University these are:

  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) immunisation
  • Meningococcal ACWY immunisation

Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) immunisation - for all students

Measles, mumps and rubella are highly infectious conditions that can have serious and potentially fatal complications. The MMR vaccine is a safe and effective combined vaccine that protects against the three separate illnesses, in a single injection. The full course of the MMR vaccination requires two doses and should be given at least 4 weeks apart. It is likely that you will have received one MMR immunisation as a baby or a child, but it is advised to check with your GP before arriving at university if both doses have been administered.

If you have not received the MMR vaccine before leaving for university, you can register with a new GP practice once you arrive and arrange to get the vaccine here as soon as possible.

Meningococcal ACWY immunisation - for first time University entrants

Meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning) are rare, but life threatening diseases. They are caused by several groups of meningococcal bacteria- the most common types are A, B, C, W and Y. Young people have the highest risk of contracting meningococcal disease, as well as children and babies.

The meningococcal ACWY (Men ACWY) vaccine, helps protect against meningitis and septicaemia. Students starting University for the first time are at an increased risk of MenACWY disease because they are more likely to stay in halls of residence and have more close contact with new students, particularly during the first few weeks of term. You are eligible for the vaccine if you are under 25 years of age and attending university for the first time (ie you are an undergraduate).

It is important that you are immunised at least two weeks before you attend University to make sure that your immunity has fully built up.

If you did not get MenACWY immunised before leaving for University, you can register with a new GP practice once you arrive and arrange to get the vaccine as soon as possible.

If you are postgraduate and have any queries about meningitis and septicaemia you should speak with your GP.

Information about vaccinations

Please refer to the Immunisation Scotland website for further information or call the NHS inform helpline on 0800 22 44 88 (text phone 18001 0800 22 44 88).
