The entire museum was breathtaking, the designs and architecture was amazing. The designs were set up in such a way that they complemented the artwork. The wing that was covered in wood was my favorite part of the museum. I have always grown up in houses with wooden floors, so I have always felt more comfortable and safe around them. Rooms with wooden floors always seems to be more bright and warmer than others. Wood from floor to ceiling looks very modern, new and sleek. It shows a certain level of sophistication that not most places have. This design was perfect for its artwork as well, because all of the pieces in that room were made of some type of stone. So in a way, they clashed but complemented each other. Also, this part of the museum opened up to an outside display of lush nature. So it was almost as if the nature from outside was overflowing to the inside.
The piece that spoke most to my core values was the Seated Buddha sculpture. I was raised a catholic and have practiced it my entire life. In high school, I was very involved with my church. I went to nearly every service, after mass teen groups, and even volunteered to teach classes about faith during the week. Being the religious student that I am, it was refreshing to see a beautiful piece of art devoted to faith and religion. Granted, it wasn’t a catholic piece, however, it reminded me of the two years that I spent living overseas in Iwakuni, Japan with my family. The ties I have to my family have influenced me to become the man that I am today, so it would only make sense that they are a part of my core values. Overall, this piece connected with me on a deeper level than most and made me feel more emotional.
The piece I thought represented the Good Life well at the Harn was this black and white photo of Wall Street. The city of New York is always moving, the city that never sleeps. Some of the most powerful and influential people in the country reside in this city. In many ways, it embodies the good life. To me, the Good Life would be providing for my family and making them happy. My current girl friend is obsessed with the idea of living in New York someday. So if I could give her that dream, I would feel as if I had achieved the Good Life. Also, the picture depicts a cigar store. Cigars are often affiliated with happiness, celebration and good times. So, naturally, I saw the Good Life all throughout this image.
