CU 1010 Final Portfolio Harold Young


Honestly, this project was a great experience, this project was designed to take you out of your comfort and to find different strategies to help improve. This project was also an experiment to understand and better yourself. In the project, we had 8 different exhibits that make work, from a Recognizing and advising self-talk patterns to a professor’s interview and so on. The portfolio process made me realize a lot of things that I didn’t know about myself until I had to do a lot of the steps that were given in the different exhibits. For example, one of my favorite exhibits was the professor interview the interview helped me get to know my professor a lot more than what I assumed in class. In class I was basically judging a book by its cover, but the professor interview allowed me to get to know more about my professor more than just academic related things. Something that surprised me in my professor interview was the amount of love she gives students, without doing the interview I would have never know, the interview made me feel more comfortable to ask her questions about the different things in class. The portfolio also helped me improve on things that I sometimes didn’t even realize was a problem. The portfolio made me think about how I can change my study habits, improve on my time management and even appreciate what I value. Outcome three was very helpful, it made me realized how trying new studying skills gives you different results. For example, I used Quizlet as one of my resources and it helped me study for my human sex class instead of just looking at the book. The portfolio was altogether a great plan for helping students stop and concentrate on what they’re doing and fix it at that moment. Because with a lot of exhibits you must take logs and journals, where you must write down what you’re doing at certain times. A great example of this would be in outcome two which is time management and self-study, in this exhibit, I could see what I was doing all day and rather it was Urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, or neither urgent nor important. This exhibit and exercise helped me reschedule my day to wear most of my urgent and important things would be done first, and my not important or urgent things would come last. This exhibit helped with getting a lot of work finish, and finding out different things in my life that I was overlooking. This portfolio was a great idea, and I will always remember some of the things I went through to complete this portfolio. Another part of this portfolio that had a positive effect on me, was the time management exhibit, it showed me were most my time was being consumed and what other things I could have been doing during those times. I honestly would recommend other students to do this portfolio if they plan on bettering them.

Recognizing and Revising Self-Talk Patterns

Part 1: Identifying Three Different Inner Voices

1. Inner Critic:

“I’m not good at it; that’s why I can’t do it.”

Definition: The Inner Critic judges’ self, blames self, complains about self, and demeans self. Its positive intention is to protect self from failure, but the actual result is either a partial attempt or no attempt at all.

Identify: When it comes to learning certain subjects, sometimes I tell myself I’m not as smart as some of the other kids that’s why I don’t understand the lessons sometimes.

Revise: I can channel this by telling myself that maybe I just need some extra help, that I should go to my teacher’s office hours and even to the pal sessions.

2. Inner Defender

“I would’ve made an A if my professor could speak English!”

Definition: The Inner Defender judges’ others, then blames them before self-assessment takes place. Once blaming an external takes place, complaining about the external and demeaning the external replaces problem-solving and escape occurs. Its positive intention seems to be fending off criticism and punishment from others.

Identify: In math, I always used to blame me not learning on my math teachers because he speaks different and because he goes through the lesson very fast.

Revise: I should go ask the teacher to slow down, and to break it down for me.

3. Inner Guide:

“I did this, so now I need to correct it.”

Definition: The Inner Guide offers an objective and wise perspective about ourselves and others. It doesn’t self-demean; it doesn’t attack. Our inner guide tells us the absolute truth and allows us to be more conscious of reality, other people, and ourselves.

Identify: this is what I should be doing, blaming me for the problem instead of everybody else.

Don’t Revise! By me blaming myself, I will understand that I really am the problem and not any and everyone else.

Part 2:

I honestly think that my default inner voice is the Inner Defender. I always put my situation off on to the next person when I know that I am the main cause. I know that if I put forth the effort to do what’s right I won’t be stressing in the end. I think this is because I am a lazy person, and it’s just easier to put the blame on someone else. Of course, I want to change that, because the sooner I change my inner voice from my inner defender to my inner guide, then a lot of things will change and I will actually be responsible for my actions altogether. How I will try to change it, is the next time that I am in any type of situation like this, to sit down and blame it on myself. I will tell myself that I must get myself out of this situation. I see myself putting this into practice in many ways, I feel as if anytime I receive any kind of notification good or bad I should be able to say “I did this”. I should be able to blame everything I do on myself. I should also be able to feel good or bad and if it is bad I should know exactly how to fix this. When it comes to trying this in the future I just must become accustom to this mentally and physically.

Part 2: Monitor implementation of your plan.

(2|21|17) - I have my alarm set for 10:00a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday to wake me up, but on this day I didn't hear it. I woke up exactly 10:16a.m which put me behind schedule, I rushed to get dress and leave for class by 10:45 which was a success because my class starts at 11. That class ended at 12:15 which only gives me 15 minutes to walk across campus to my next class. I usually make it in 8-10 minutes which gives me a few minutes to spare. That class ends at 1:20 p.m and after that i journeyed back across campus to go to the dining hall, where I ate and socialized with my friends for an hour and a half. After that I went to my dorm and took an hour nap. I always set my alarm to 5:00 p.m. That day it took me roughly an hour to get myself situated so i could study for a few. I set my timer to 6:30p.m so I know exactly when to start studying. I studied for an hour and a half, took a 30 minute break and began to review. I reviewed for 30 minutes before finding myself drifting off to play the video game.
(2|22|17) - I have my alarm set for 10:15a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to wake me up. It takes me 40 minutes to get dress and leave for class by 11:00a.m. which was always a success because my class starts at 11:15. That class ended at 12:05 which only gives me 15 minutes to walk across campus to my next class. I usually make it in 3 minutes which gives me a good amount of time to socialize with people I run into. That class ends at 1:15 p.m and after that i eat and then go study. After that i watched tv until it was time for lab. After lab I did some homework and played the game for the rest of the night.
(2|23|17) - I have my alarm set for 10:00a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday to wake me up. I woke up on time today. which started my day off normal. I I didn't have to rush to get dress. I left my room for class at 10:45. The class ended at 12:15 which only gives me 15 minutes to walk across campus to my next class. Today the walk took 14 minutes which gives me a minute to spare. That class ends at 1:20 p.m and after that I went to eat, where I ate by myself for an hour. After that I went and took a nap. I did not set my alarm to 5:00 p.m. and still woke up around that time. That day it took me longer to get myself situated so i could study for a few. I set my timer to an hour which was about 6:25p.m. Then I started studying. I studied for 2 hours, took a 15 minute break and began to review. I reviewed for 25 minutes before finding myself drifting off to sleep.

Part 3: Evaluate & Revise

  • In this exhibit, I saw how much time i spent during my day either being productive or not, It also helps to see where most of the my time is going, and that some things i should change.
  • 2. Based on your self-study, I see that I should study more hours and quit sleeping so much.

During this process, I saw improvements in all majority of my grades. This process was fun and it taught me different ways to study. My confidence level increased also, I think the flash cards and quizlet worked very well for me. The group quizzing wasn't such a success because we kept going off subject or off topic getting carried away by conversations. In my future studies, I will use these same techniques to improve my previous grades even more. I will continue to try new strategies, because you never know what works best unless you try everything.

3. For my next test i will study harder, look and read over questions on my test carefully and work to my best ability, i will review daily and go get all the help I can. I will use quizlet and any other network to help me to do the best that I can.

4. REFLECT: This test analysis with my teacher was a very interesting concept that i am glad we had to do. Sitting in her office with her going over my previous quiz was helpful, she broke things down and made everything seem so much easier. She was very nice and energetic. She told me that for most of my answers i was basically just overthinking. She was happy to help me, when i told her what class i was doing this for.

Professor Interview

2. Whats was your major in college? -Literature, MA in writing in rhetoric.

3. What do you like best about your jobs? - new ideas and new concepts

4. What do you do for fun? - Play with my cats, harass people, watch movies & read books.

5. How do you balance home and work, and teaching and researching? - had to recognize, and put reasonable limits on certain things.

6. How do you define teaching? - Sharing of ideas, and guiding students ideas.


From this conversation with my professor, I feel as if I have a stronger connection with her, I feel as if she is dedicated to teaching and helping students succeed. I see her as more than just an average professor. She helps me not just with her class but with all my classes, if she doesn’t know the answer she points me in the correct direction to get help. She isn’t just an average human being just like the rest of the teachers here. She dedicates her time to being more involved on and off campus. I found out the amount of love she gives to her multiple cats and that made me adore her even more. I chose this professor because she's a very intelligent woman, I look up her because of her great personality. My reactions to the answers that she provided were normal, because I already had a feeling of what her answers were going to be. From our conversation, I learned that she has a degree in literature and that she is currently a student at Clemson University working to get her PHD. This meeting affected my perception of her being more friendly because of the overall answers she gave.

The value I automatically ranked first was God's Will because i feel as if everything must fall under God's will. The hardest ones to discard were friendship, and growth. I say this because I am a peoples person, who is really social and who feels as if friendships are very important, and also because i see growth as being important and needed in life. The only thing seemed to surprised me about this activity was that out of almost 50 cards, I found out what my top 5 beliefs were.

My action plans to be able to for fill all of my short and long term goals, are to pray, be humble, workout daily, eat and drink healthy, be my own person and to grow to become more responsible for all my actions.

Self-Designed Exhibit Proposal #1

Money Management

Topic of inquiry - I want to study money management because I do not know how to budget correctly.

Hypothesis - I expect to learn how to save money, and to budget better.

Methods/Data Collection/Documentation of Learning - I will conduct my study by choosing 3 different weeks to track how much money i spent each week, and a study of how much i could save.

Overall from this process i see how much money I am wasting in just food alone, if I do not eat out Monday - Thursday I could save over half the money I am spending each week.

Topic of inquiry - To drink more and eat more fruits so i can live healthy life and perform better in classes.

Hypothesis - Eating Fruits and drinking more water will helped me get of my sluggish lazy attitude.

Methods/Data Collection/Documentation of learning - Use a graph to mark the the bottles of water i drink and fruits i eat.

Type of Presentation - Upload a picture of the chart

This is a challenge i started doing, and i try to do it every week.

For fruits i eat 2 apples per day and a hand full of grapes.
