The Brazilian General Strike

Last Friday, much of Brazil went into a partial shutdown due to protests against recent government reforms and their president Michel Temer (who currently has a 4% approval rating).

President Michel Temer (above) took over as president of Brazil about a year ago after the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff.
  • Reasons for protests:
  • Workers rights limited even further
  • Retirement age raised
  • Pensions and social security benefits cut
  • Unemployment rate is rising rapidly (currently 14 million out of work, 13.7%)
  • Political leaders accused of being corrupt (bribery, criminality, etc.)
