He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain- the soldier can be anyone

A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew.

And he knows he shouldn't kill- the morals of the soldiers

And he knows he always will- his duty

Kill you for me my friend and me for you- either I kill you or you kill my friends

This verse is important because it shows how the soldiers could have been anyone and shows some choices that the soldiers had to make when in war.

This reflects the time period because in that time period America was at war with Vietnam. The war in Vietnam is taking place when this song was recorded and was popular. The overall message was that soldiers fight for the world and they can be anyone, they fight for peace and that they make hard choices.
