Extended Family:

A family made up of several generations

These families ranged in size from a few individuals to hundreds of members.

Matrilineal:

Tracing family descent through mothers rather than fathers

When a women married, she joined her husband's family. To make up for the loss, her family received presents, including cattle, goats, cloth, or metal tools.

Oral History:

Stories passed down from generation to generation

Lessons were also given through short proverbs.

Sugarcane:

A grassy plant that is a natural source of sugar

Sugarcane was grown on plantations, or huge farms.

Spiritual:

A gospel song

Over time, other forms of African-based music developed, such as ragtime, jazz, rock and roll, and more recently, rap.
