Margaret Kieler CV and Profile

Teaching experience:

1999-2002: French Teacher at Mount Horeb Area Middle School and High School-- I taught seventh and eighth grade French in addition to French 1-2 at the high school level. In March 2001, the middle school took a group of seventh and eighth graders to Paris for one week. I also advised Forensics.
2003-2005: French Teacher at DeForest Area Middle School--I taught 7th and 8th grade French and coached middle school Forensics. I also advised the French Club. One highlight I had from this opportunity was getting to know and working cross-categorically with the social studies department to plan a virtual trip to Paris.
2005-2014: full-time mommy--my family relocated from Madison to Green Bay and I was fortunate enough to stay home while my children were young enough to need before and after school care.
2014 to present: Middle School French Teacher and Middle/High School ESL Teacher at Pulaski Community School District. In Pulaski, I teach 7th grade French (nine-week classes), 8th grade French (every day, all year), and English Language Learners at the middle and high school levels. This year, one highlight was welcoming and helping a family from Chad acclimate to American school life. They spoke no English and I was able to use my language skills to help ease the transition.

French Learning Experiences:

1993: Semester abroad in La Rochelle, France. I lived with a French family and attended a French high school. My host family and I have reconnected quite a few times, most recently in 2016.
1996-1997: A Year in Aix-en-Provence at L'Université de Provence. Here, I took a full load of classes with French university students and was part of a swim club.
1995-1996 and 1997-1998: Resident of La Maison Française at UW-Madison. La Maison Française is a private residence in which all residents must speak French in common areas. Because of the frequent meetings at La Maison Française, I was able to network with the French professors at UW-Madison and bounce ideas off of other potential French teachers and those with a passion for the language.

Hobbies and Interests:

1. Traveling!!

Our family has had the opportunity to travel to France on numerous occasions. This enhances my teaching because I'm able to teach the students about what I have seen and experienced. When we travel, we like to rent an apartment to get the experience of living there.

2. Family Time

My son, Ivan, is 15 and a freshman at Preble. He loves science, space, technology and watching documentaries. My daughter, Nadia, is 12 and in 6th grade at Red Smith. She is involved in gymnastics, track, art, and pole vaulting. As a family, we love to travel and spend time with my parents and my husband's parents. I often talk about my family to enhance the connection between me and my students. In fact, the family unit is my favorite unit to teach in French class, mainly because it's such an important part of life in France.

3. Fitness

Fitness is important to me and my family. Since 2009, I have been involved with running and triathlons, completing two full-Ironman events in 2014 and 2016. I have also run two marathons and a handful of half-marathons. I like to use movement in my classroom, as studies have shown that actions help students learn and retain more information.
Thank you for considering me for this position. I believe my passion for the language would be a great addition to the already strong program at West De Pere. Please contact me at 608-239-2753 or margiesaalsaa@gmail.com
