Back on the north island we spent ten days in the small coastal town of Opunake which has a famous surf break and lies in the Taranaki region. In the middle of the Taranaki region is Mt. Egmont which is a volcano resembling Mt. Fuji in Japan. Mt. Egmont served as backdrop and stand in for Mt. Fuji in the movie The Last Samurai featuring Tom Cruise.
Before hitting Auckland we spent two weeks in the holiday town of Mt. Maunganui. We were lucky to be there at the same time as the national surf life saving championchip.
We spent four days in Auckland before catching the plane to Australia. We also celebrated Moas 13th birthday.
