What impact does neglect of a child leave on them and society?
Child abuse and neglect is an issue that affects many lives in the United States. Child abuse during infancy and early childhood has been shown to negatively affect child development. When kids have been abuse, this has a long-lasting affect on the kids life . Child abuse and neglect can have enduring physical, intellectual, and psychological outcome into adolescence and adulthood of the victim. Attachment problems caused by neglect during infancy and early childhood can affect a child's physical, behavioral, cognitive, and social functioning.
What is child abuse like today?
Child abuse is more common than many people care to believe. In the United States each year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made which involve almost 6 million children. Each day 4 or 5 children are killed by child abuse or neglect. Children whose parents abuse alcohol & drugs are 3 times more likely to be abused and ;4 times more likely to be neglected than other children.
What child abuse is the most prevalent?
Child abuse comes in many forms, but the emotional effect on the child is the common theme. Children need consistency, guidelines and rules with order, and the knowledge that their parents are looking out for their safety. Abused children cannot predict how their parents will act. Their world is an unpredictable, frightening place with no rules. Whether the abuse is a slap, a harsh comment, stony silence, or not knowing if there will be dinner on the table tonight, the end result is a child that feels unsafe, uncared for, and alone. Child neglect is one of the most common type of child abuse—where there is a pattern of failing to provide for a child's basic needs, whether it be adequate food, clothing, hygiene, or supervision.Sometimes, a parent might become physically or mentally unable to care for a child, such as with a serious injury, untreated depression, or anxiety. Other times, alcohol or drug abuse may seriously impair judgment and the ability to keep a child safe.

1. Approximately 5 children die every day because of child abuse.

2. 1 out of 3 girls and 1 out of 5 boys will be sexually abused before they reach age 18.

3. 90% of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way. 68% are abused by a family member.

4. Most children become victims of abuse and neglect at 18 months or younger.

5. In 2010, 1,537 children died of abuse or neglect. 79.4% were under the age of 4 and 47.7% were under the age of 1.

6. Boys (48.5%) and girls (51.2%) become victims at nearly the same rate.

11. Abused children are less likely to practice safe sex, putting them at greater risk for STDs. They’re also 25% more likely to experience teen pregnancy.
