Knightly Knews 9/8/17 Friday, September 8, 2017

It’s been a fantastic and fun first week of school. I have enjoyed meeting and greeting so many smiling faces--it's exciting to see our students ready to go this year. Our focus this week has been on developing relationships, building culture, and establishing expectations centered on our three core principles at Smith: safety, respect, and responsibility. Academics will begin to ramp up next week.

Have a great weekend. Be sure to check out the various pictures and information below, as well as a schedule of next week's activities at the bottom of the page.

This Week at Smith

Basketball Jones Assembly

Basketball Jones helped us kick off the year with a sixth grade assembly on Thursday. A fun and energetic time with a positive message left students energized and inspired.

Board Game Friday!

Students had fun playing a game with their peers at lunch today. Games will be available every Friday at lunch.

Troy Public Library E-Cards

SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH! We are encouraging ALL Troy School District parents/guardians to sign students up for a FREE electronic library card through a partnership with Troy Public Library.

The e-card gives students access to free homework help, research assistance, and free e-books and audio books using the OverDrive app. Any student previously signed up and all NEW sign-ups during the month of September will be entered into a weekly drawing for a Barnes and Noble giftcard. We will draw names and notify winners for 4 weeks, starting September 22nd.

Want help signing up? See this flier from Mrs. Chatel. Please email her at cchatel@troy.k12.mi.us with questions.

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Coaches

Smith is looking to start up a couple FTC robotics teams and need 2-3 coaches. Parents, if you are interested in coaching and/or would like some more information, please contact Mr. Fulcher ASAP. For more information on FTC, go here.

8th Grade DC Trip

Final payment was due in August. If you have a balance, please take care of that as soon as possible.

Some forms were mailed home by World Strides before school started. We will also be handing out some forms on Friday, September 8 through social studies classes. Extra forms are located on the Smith trip page.

Forms are due to Mrs. Casko or Mrs. Trice by September 15. That is one week- as we have deadlines quickly approaching to finalize reservations for our trip. Students need to return the following forms:

  • Medical and Behavior form - the is a two-sided document. Also, please check that it is signed on both sides.
  • The 4 Forms sheet includes roommate selection, over-the-counter meds, movie, and photo

Copies of the forms are located on the trip page on the Smith website. Feel free to print a new one if the original forms were misplaced.

Please review the Roommate Communication Letter sent home with the students on Friday or view it online. It is our hope that this will ease the stress as they prepare their roommate selections.

We will update the webpage and share details with students as we get closer to our departure date. There will not be holding a parent meeting as all information is distributed via students or online.

Thanks so much for your help! Moving the trip to November has put us on a very tight timeline and getting forms in a timely manner will be extremely helpful. Please contact Mrs. Casko or Mrs. Trice if you have any questions.
