Novel Study

I am happy to introduce our first novel study book of the school year. Both of my reading classes will be reading the book, researching information, and creating a unique project to present to the class.

Novel study of the month: Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr.

Libro del mes: Sadako y las mil grullas de papel, Eleanor Coerr.

Reading: Students will build a fundamental knowledge of the unique structures of realistic fiction and expository text. Readers actively ask questions of a text while reading to comprehend beyond the surface level. You can help your child by reading a fictional book or story at home, and identify the common elements of fiction (such as characters and their relationships, important events and their impact on the story, etc.) Have them share a summary about what they have read, correctly sequencing the events.

Social Emotional Learning: We are focusing on empathy, listening with attention, and steps for solving a problem/conflict. You can guide your child at home by helping them process emotions and identifying/naming their feelings.

Homework: Students will complete a daily reading log. Recommended reading time is 15-20 minutes each day. Please monitor these logs and provide your signature. Students are expected to show the reading log as part of their homework. Starting September, students will receive a homework packet for Reading and Language Arts. Each sheet is labeled with a specific day of the week. Homework packets will be assigned on Monday, and they will be turned in on Friday. Students are expected to bring the homework packet to school everyday. Please provide your child with a designated homework time and space. Preferably, a peaceful and quiet area of the house.

Upcoming Dates: Back to School Night, September 10th, 2019 at 4:30-6:00 PM.

Novel Study project due on October 11, 2019
