Welcome Honors Class of 2025 JUNE 2021 News

Welcome from Dean Newcomer

We are now into the summer months and quickly approaching the start of fall semester. This is a time of new beginnings, exciting changes, and grand hopes for the future. Move-in and orientation activities with our incoming freshman students are just around the corner.

At the time of writing this message, we are on target to welcome a class of 230 new freshmen to the Honors College. Each of these students brings unique experiences and backgrounds to the Honors College community. We will strive to keep you informed, and we are happy to answer your questions. Feel free to contact us at honors@jmu.edu.

Exciting times are ahead and we look forward to journeying with you as you grow. I want to wish everyone a new academic year filled with meaningful relationships, interesting classes, incredible personal growth, and an enduring quest for academic excellence and lifelong learning. Remember to be safe and to be kind to each other. Here’s to making this an incredible summer and academic year for all!

Summer Springboard is around the corner. We look forward to meeting you!

Summer Springboard is an important event. During JMU’s Summer Springboard, you will learn about becoming a JMU student and how to best prepare yourself for the first day on campus. You are required to attend Honors Springboard.

Honors Springboard sessions will be held in-person on the following dates: June 28, 29, 30; and July 1, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20. Virtual Springboard sessions will be July 15 and 21.

All in-person Springboard sessions are from 8:00-8:30 a.m. in the Atlantic Union Bank Center Multipurpose Room. Because Honors sessions are “invitation only,” they are not on the general Orientation schedule nor are they listed on your Springboard registration. In addition to notifying you here, watch the Honors social media feed and your email for Springboard reminders.

If you are planning to attend the virtual Springboard days: the Honors sessions will be held via Zoom on July 15 and 21 from 11:20 - 11:50 a.m. The Zoom log-in will be: https://tinyurl.com/2021HONSpringboard (Meeting ID: 812 5841 4307 | Passcode: 56838537).

Staying Informed

The Honors College now has a Class of 2025 web portal solely dedicated to sharing information with YOU. Please bookmark the site for quick access to news you need to know. You can also start getting to know one another in the STUDENTS ONLY Honors Class of 2025 Facebook group. Dr. Alysia Davis, Director of Student Engagement, also maintains a Weebly with updates about Honors programs. As always, reach out to us at honors@jmu.edu if you have questions.

Move-In & Honors Orientation

Honors students will be moving in at the same time as all other JMU students beginning on Saturday, August 21. Any questions related to move-in should be directed to the Office of Residence Life. More information about Honors Orientation activities will be emailed to you in July.

Save the Date for the Freshman Picnic

Picture yourself at the Freshman Picnic on the lovely Hillcrest House lawn: Save the date and plan to attend on Thursday, August 26 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.! This will be a great opportunity to meet new Honors friends!

Honors College Prep

All Honors students will join together to explore a common theme of resilience.

During the 2021-2022 academic year, the Honors College will explore a theme of resilience. Honors will offer a variety of student programs relating to the common theme, and faculty plan to include critical examinations of resilience in their Honors seminars. We look forward to having productive conversations with you about the many facets of resilience. We will explore different disciplinary notions of resilience, its benefits, as well as systemic challenges and inequalities which create conditions requiring resilience in the first place.

To kick off your engagement with resilience on a fun note, check out the JMU Honors RESILIENT playlist on Spotify. Feel free to add your own favorite uplifting and empowering songs to the collaborative playlist!

Major Mixers Preview

Major Mixers are some of the many awesome Honors student programs you can look forward to this fall. Major Mixers are informal conversations connecting students interested in similar areas of research, but who don’t necessarily have the exact same major. Embodying the interdisciplinary spirit of Honors, these mixers allow students to interact across majors - YOU get to decide where you “fit in.” In the Major Mixers, participants meet each other, share interests, have fun, and hopefully walk away with new friends. The full schedule of Major Mixers for fall 2021 semester will be posted soon, but in the meantime you already have the opportunity to get to know other Honors students with similar interests! Honors has a dedicated GroupMe already set up for each of the Major Mixer areas. This page provides a quick reference for all Major Mixer GroupMe links. Click on the subject areas that interest you and get plugged into conversation with one another!

Happy to Meet You

Honors faculty and staff are so excited to get to know each and everyone of you. Please be sure to introduce yourself when you get to campus!
