Bond University Queensland Country claim Horan-Little Shield with win over Fijian Drua

Bond University Queensland Country have secured a 24-17 win over Fijian Drua to claim the Horan-Little Shield in Round 8 of the National Rugby Championship, on Saturday afternoon at Lautoka’s Churchill Park, Fiji.

It was a gruelling encounter in sweltering conditions, but Queensland Country weathered the heat to become the first team to claim a win over the Drua in Fiji.

The four-try-to-three win sees Queensland Country claim top spot in the NRC standings with one round remaining

HEAD COACH BRAD THORN SAID: “Today’s match speaks volumes about the heart and character of this side. We had to make a number of changes heading into the match, losing our captain Duncan Paia’aua and Izaia Perese. It’s taken a full squad to get to where we are and the guys who came into the squad today got the job done."

5min | Queensland Country Number 8 Caleb Timu rushed up in defence to charge down a clearance kick before regathering for the first try of the match

25min | Timu claimed his second try in the 25th minute when he took a quick tap, dummied and dived over the line.

27min | Fijian Drua captain John Stewart pegged back Queensland Country’s lead two minutes later to make it a five-point game, 12-7.

68min | A long-range counter attack was finished off by Drua scrumhalf Frank Lomani who locked the scores up at 17-all when he dived over in the corner

73min | Queensland Country swung the ball wide to winger Eto Nabuli who broke through two tackle attempts to dive over in the corner for the match-winning try.
