Package Design Unit 3

Package Design with a Conscience?

In this summative assignment you are challenged to create a package design that is small enough to be printed on one piece of card stock paper OR one made of a recyclable, reusable, or sustainable material.

Product "look" and visibility on a shelf of competing items is always a challenge, as is package production, cost and waste concerns. This makes this project a very complex one.

In this assignment you will research a variety of packaging styles for either a small food product or a small lifestyle product. All the information that is usually on packaging for purchase must be present: nutrition or content information, warnings, barcode and bi-lingual text.

Even if you choose to use regular card stock for you packaging, please be conscious of how much waste is being created in the packaging and how much energy is being used in it's creation.

Strange things can happen to packaging after it's "first life"

It is unlikely, but possible that containers or packages are reused and that their value can increase after their first use. Vintage packages or antiques are one example of this, but one that is quite interesting is the instance of Tramp Art made in many parts of the world, but popularized in the U.S.. Tramp art is made of old cigar boxes or shipping crates. In contrast, now pieces of tramp art sell from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars U.S..

Another example is the art of El Anatsui, a Ghanian Artist who is known for his spectacular hanging metal sculptures made from liquor bottle wraps.

Question

Is there a way you can plan for or encourage people to give your packaging a second life?

Research

In this project I would like you to conduct more detailed research that relates to a number of aspects of your design.

  • I would like you to consider your target audience and create at least 2 personas
  • I would like you to research innovative design and have at least 3 examples and write a brief description & analysis of each
  • I would like you to also research sustainable package design and show an example of at least one sustainable package or package material and analyse its relevance to your product.

The Design Process

Product Selection

Please select a product that is small enough for its packaging to be printed on a letter sized piece of paper. Partial wrapping would be a way to use a letter sized piece of paper to wrap a larger item.

Package Requirements

Product Selection

Once you have selected or invented your item, please identify the required pieces of text and symbol information that must be on it. Some elements are universally required, others depend on the type of item. Please consider the following list.

  • all items must have a barcode
  • all items must have English & French text
  • items must have any warnings appropriate for the item (e.g. suggested age, choking hazzard, toxic or corrosive qualities, etc. )
  • items might have an endorsement label, like the queens seal, organic symbol, awards won,
  • nutrition information is required for any food product.

Please make sure a list of requirements is present in your Spark Page planning.

Photographing your Package

Setting up for a product shoot can be a high tech or low tech endeavour. In any case,

Design Planning and final Spark Page

Your design process may take many forms. You are expected to generate the following and have the images and links to original files on a Spark Page:

  • 10 thumbnails
  • 3 roughs
  • 1 comp - this and the above can be digital if you wish
  • a template for your container ( it must be able to be made out of a letter sized piece of cardstock or the equivalent of another 2D material.
  • an Adobe Illustrator version of your template with the package design (logo, text, bar code, ingredients etc. in both English and French).
  • A plain paper prototype of your packaging
  • a final card stock version of your package
  • a photo of your package on the Spark Page well lit and composed
  • a rationale: Your Rationale which should include: a description of your piece, your inspiration, write about any design problems you had and how your solved them, what was the coolest part of the piece, and finally, what you would like to do next with this skill.
