Sonnet Baroque in burmatofts at London road, Manchester

I don't know why - but my visit to London Road Fire Station, Manchester was accompanied in my mind by The Verve's song: Sonnet.

Maybe a sympathetic dirge aligning with the fate and condition of this grade II* listed building, but probably more in empathy with the lyrical and poetic qualities of the exterior which is its most significant feature.

Over the years the syntax has been dulled by layers of occupancy and the grime of this great industrial city of Manchester.

Yet - in the shining light, the rhythm and syncopation remains its material strength

Lit up, and close up, the building is poetry in brick and terracotta

Maybe a sonnet more akin to Shakespeare than The Verve
