Shauna Harris was recently hired as the Carolina Union's Associate Director of Student Life and Leadership. She has worked at Carolina for a few months, but she has been a Tar Heel for much of her life. Get to know her!
Where are you from?
I'm originally from Loris, South Carolina, which is a town about 15 minutes from North Myrtle Beach. I grew up in between North Myrtle Beach and Loris, so I was always at the beach.
How did you arrive at the Carolina Union?
I've always loved the Tar Heels. I've loved them since Vince Carter was here, in 1995, when I was in high school. I've also always loved this area, and I wanted an opportunity to give back to students and student leadership. To be a part of a community I loved growing up -- I live for that. It’s been awesome.
What does your daily schedule entail?
Meetings with a lot of campus partners. I’m still learning the Carolina Union and the Carolina community. I have a lot of meetings with the campus partners to look at how we can enhance leadership programs. I also do a lot of administrative work and frequently meet with students.
When you're not working, how do you like to spend your time?
Exploring different restaurants. I love local restaurants. I don’t really like chain restaurants, so I try to stay away from those. I just like going new places, so I also like to travel. I also love to read.
You love to read. Any book recommendations?
Oh, I’d have to think about that. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan. I recently bought the new book, the Cursed Child, and I enjoyed that. I want to go to Harry Potter World one day!
What's been your favorite aspect of Carolina so far?
I love the spirit on campus and seeing students take pride in being at Carolina. I love walking outside on warm sunny days and seeing people congregating and engaging with one another. Sometimes you go places and that type of thing isn’t happening, but it happens organically here.
Earlier you said you loved Vince Carter. Who's your favorite UNC Basketball player of all time?
Of all time? Can I have 3? They’re all from that same era. I loved Vince Carter, I loved Antawn Jamison, and I loved Dante Calabria. That team and that trio… I liked them a lot.
