The Principal's PEN Parent edition 4.1

Welcome Back to The Principal's Pen! This is a short month...but there is still a lot of information here.

Please take the Survey

We are conducting a School Culture Survey until December 9th, 2016. The purpose of the survey is to gather information that will help us in continuing the tradition of excellence for all in our schools. This survey will be used to continue to improve our school culture while guiding every child, by need and by name, to graduation.

If you, or a parent you know, lacks internet access to complete the survey you can come take the survey at Dunbar in the main office 12/6-12/9 anytime between 2:30-4:00.

Post from the PTO

PTO Spirit Night at Mi Patron Tuesday, December 6 at the Boonsboro Shopping Center location. Skip the cooking and come eat in or get take out and support your PTO. The restaurant will donate a portion of the evening’s sales to support our programs. Bring your friends and neighbors! All are welcome.

American Education Week in November Your PTO was busy celebrating our education team at Dunbar all week. Teachers and staff received inspirational surprises in their mailboxes, each day and there was a gift card drawing with several lucky winners each day. We appreciate all that our teachers and staff do for our students at Dunbar!

BoxTops—Our first check is on the way! Hopefully you have noticed the awesome BoxTops drop box in the lobby at Dunbar! In just the short time we have started collecting these, we have already raised $50 for PTO! Can we make it $500 for the spring check?

All you have to do is collect the little rectangles found on hundreds of products you know and love -- including cereals, snacks, food storage bags, meals and sides, paper products and juices. Each BoxTop that is clipped and turned in to the school is worth 10 cents. Now, there’s a way to increase the value of those little rectangles—download the BoxTops App—free for IOS and Android. Scan items and your receipts and we get a bonus in addition to the ones you clip from the package! Questions? Contact ( or Nanette Boswell (

If your child is interested in auditioning, signup sheets will be posted in the front office and outside of W303. Your child will need to prepare 30-60 seconds of a school-appropriate contemporary song to sing with no accompaniment. We will also be testing pitch and range during the audition, and there will be an activity bus provided. Contact or with any questions.

The Golden Poet Award

As you know, our Mission at DunBAR is to "Raise the BAR". We are excited to announce a new initiative that will hopefully help our kids do just that. We call it the Golden Poet Award. Students can earn the Golden Poet status once per nine weeks by achieving three out of four of the following standards: two hours of community service (must complete a community service form in the main office. See Ms. Bell for a form), no discipline referrals or behavior issues, no unexcused absences, or a positive referral. Students who achieve the Golden Poet status will be recognized on our morning news and placed in a quarterly drawing for prizes. This is just another way for us to show our kids that doing the right thing, and going the extra mile, does pay off.

***Don't forget to have your child complete a community service form in the main office. See Ms. Bell for a form.***

Below is a shirt that all of our Golden Poets receive.

Encourage our teachers- We know our teachers and staff members work very hard and need a pat on the back every now and then. If you would like to recognize a staff member for going above and beyond, you can click here to submit a positive referral using our Google Form, or email me with your nominations . (Our teachers appreciate this more than you know!)

The Principal's Challenge

Our Principal's Challenges have been going great! These challenges are simple and quick acts of kindness and respect towards their peers and staff. Students will NOT receive any reward or special acknowledgement for completing these challenges. It's just our way of giving them the opportunity to "Raise the BAR"! Please help us out with this by asking your child what the challenge for the week is and how they are completing it. Next week's challenge is to simply "Say something nice to someone you don't know very well".

Final Thoughts: Half way there... I believe we have had a really great start to this school year. I want to thank all of you for your support. We cannot do what we do successfully with our your help and support. We still have a lot more work to do...but we know the Poet train is moving in the right direction. Greater days are ahead! Raising the BAR!

But wait...THERE'S MORE! I'd like to introduce everyone to the newest edition to our family, Lilly Grace Brown! She was born on Tuesday 11/29/2016 at 3:50 AM. Mom and baby are is very SLEEPY and proud!
