Getting There is Half the Fun ... so they say.

Well, maybe... but not necessarily when it begins with a 10 hour flight from San Francisco to Paris, a two hour layover in Paris followed by a 2 hour flight from Paris to Venice, with virtually no sleep overnight. Arriving to a foggy Venice didn't seem too bad, however, Venice was so foggy that the Venice Port Authority had denied the Viking Sea access to enter the Venice harbor due to safety. The ship had ported 100 miles to the north in Trieste. So we boarded buses for a two hour bus ride toTrieste.

Upon arrival in Trieste our bus was sent to a remote parking lot to WAIT until it was our turn to be allowed to unload. Finally when we were allowed to unload, we joined with about 800 other passengers who had also arrived by bus and then waited another two hours for everyone to be processed for boarding the ship through a port building.

Welcome to Trieste!
In 2012, Lonely Planet listed the city of Trieste as the world's most underrated travel destination.

No time to visit Trieste. That would have to be for another trip. But alas, by the time we boarded, found our room and ate a very late meal, we fell into bed, only to be awoken by the cruel and unusual punishment of breakfast aroma therapy about 4:30 AM!

The GOOD NEWS, we were underway and sailing to Venice for our first destination, but only for 6 hours rather than an extra day as scheduled.
