Last season, three weightlifters represented Citrus County at the 2016 Boys Weightlifting State Finals — one year can make a world of difference. On April 7-8 at DeLand High School, 12 county lifters will be competing among Florida’s best between both the 1A and 2A competitions.
For Lecanto in 2A, senior Zach Ulseth at the 219 class and junior Robert Yoakam at 183 already locked up their invites after first-place performances at the regional meet on March 27. Joining his fellow Panthers will be sophomore Shane Thornton at 119. Yoakam is the highest seed of any county lifter in 2A at the No. 2 spot.
In 1A, Crystal River junior Logan Wardlow is the lone Pirate in the bunch at 154 after a first-place finish in the regional on March 23.
For Citrus High, Justice Walker (183), Chris Adamson (169) and Christian Solomon (Unlimited) all earned automatic bids for that same meet. Five other Hurricanes will be joining them. Junior Sean Bedford (119), sophomore Kyle Ervin (129), senior Cody Russell (169), senior Austin Quandt (199) and senior Destin Cali (219) all got word of their invite recently after being placed in an "at-large" pool of lifters and having to wait for other regional meets to submit results.
Adamson is the only one of the bunch who will be returning to the state meet after an appearance last season and is the highest seeded county representative in 1A at No. 5.
