Holden's Mix Isis Tate Period 2

I Get Lonely Too by Drake

Throughout the book Holden's issues with abandonment are made very clear. You can tell that he wants to for real relationships with characters in the book but is very much lacking in people skills and security within himself to form these usual relationships. In Drake's song, I Get Lonely Too, he says, "Kinda thought you forgot about me". He is basically yearning to have a connection with someone and wanting people to notice that he has feelings too even though they might not be the most obvious thing to pick up on. "You could see the whole field from there, and you could see the two teams bashing each other all over the place." (Salinger 3). When Holden is describing the football game by himself he is also almost yearning for the same attention that Drake is wanting. Holden wants so badly to be down in the stands watching the game but doesn't have the security in himself or the people around him to do so.

Forever Young by Jay-Z feat. Beyoncé

In the book Holden makes it very clear that his opinion on adults is very negative. When Holden says "I just see the big phony bastard shifting into first gear and asking Jesus to send him a few more stiffs." while talking about Ossenburger in chapter 3 he is saying that he believes the older someone gets the faker and more cocky their personalities become because of the new found maturity. Although Jay-Z's words in this song are not as harsh as Holden's he does very clearly state that life is better for children while using repetition in the line "I want to be forever young". This song ties into this scene because even though the song isn't as harsh as Holden's words they are both describing how adolescence is the best time of your life.

You're Never Over by Eminem

In Eminem's song he is meaningfully pouring his feelings to someone with a lot of significance to him, this reminds me of Holden because it seems like something he would only do with Allie. When Eminem says "The days are long" it reminds me of how Holden is feeling by Allie not being with him anymore. When Holden says "He was terrifically intelligent. His teachers were always writing letters to my mother, telling her what a pleasure it was having a boy like Allie in their class" it shows just how much he truly cared for Allie. Eminem also relates to Holden when saying "I just miss you" which is exactly how Holden is feeling about Allie.

How to Save a Life by The Fray

The affection that Holden has for his little brother that died, is shown throughout the book but i also believe that is is shown in the song How to Save a Life by The Fray. The song reminds me of Holden and Allie because of the amount of regret and guilt Holden obviously feels. Holden's regret is shown when he thinks back to a time that he didn't let Allie play with him before Allie died. The same feeling of regret and guilt is heard in the song when they say "I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known how to save a life"

The Letter by Kehlani

This song reminds me of why Holden feels the way he does about life, relationship, and himself. In this song Kehlani says "I can see your smile, It's what gets me through my hard days", this reminds me of Holden thinking about Allie because it shows how much he cares for him. She also says, "Maybe I didn't deserve you, maybe I just couldn't cure you", which also relates to the book seeing that Holden feels some guilt about Allie dying from cancer, at times. If Holden did have thoughts like this it would impact the way he felt towards himself but also the fact that his younger brother died could have made him feel the way he does about adults. Holden could have all of this pent up aggression towards adults because he doesn't want to become one without his little brother being around to see him.
