Archbold Tropical Research and Education Center

Mission Statement

The recent events with Hurricane Maria caused substantial damage to the island of Dominica, including the ATREC facility. Because of this damage, our group plans to renovate the facility and rebuild the research center to its full potential.

Effects of Hurricane Maria

Damage from Hurricane Maria
  • All buildings have some damage of some sort; several are completely destroyed
  • Bee House no longer standing
  • Dormitories and classrooms no longer usable
Additional Damage

Long-term goals are to recreate the ATREC facility to its fullest extent with the ability to house interns, facilitate projects, and host events with the community surrounding the research center.

Engage Students at ATREC

Current progress includes talking with Former Clemson President James Barker, reaching out to the Clemson Architecture foundation, creating connections with Clemson Architect Director Kate Schwennsen, and beginning to form relations with architects in Charleston.
