WELCOME HOME Carl Sandburg Student Activities

SEPTEMBER 15, 2017

Historically, homecoming was an opportunity for schools to welcome back their alumni and former residents to celebrate, reminisce, and experience the traditions of the school. This year we are honored to welcome back the classes of 1987, 1992, and 1997 who will be spending part of their class reunion at the football game Friday night. As our former students make their way back to Orland Park, and the halls of Sandburg, it's a perfect time to pause and reflect on the immense impact our faculty and staff have had on so many. As we participate in the fun activities our Student Council students have planned let's remember to take the time to thank all those teachers and staff members who continue to give their time to make Sandburg such an amazing place.

Powder Puff Football is such a fun night. One of my best memories from Sandburg.

HOMECOMING 2017

Thank you to Student Council for another fun Homecoming!
THE "COLOR THE FANZ" TRADITION TRANSFORMED THE HISTORIC "WHITE-OUT" THEME BY HAVING STUDENTS RUN THROUGH BLUE POWDER AS THEY ENTER THE STADIUM.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Senior Matt Rohan is the Stage Manager for the 2018 Illinois Theatre Festival All-State performance.

How did you get involved with All-State Theatrefest?

I got involved after going freshman and sophomore year. I was very impressed with the scale of the work and the students coming together from across the state as one group to produce such an amazing work. It really inspired me. Now i want to reach for a career in theatre.

What is one of your favorite memories of Sandburg?

Oh my gosh... I think my favorite memory is the openness of the students here. Being able to collaborate with my peers on projects. The google docs and drive and collaborating as well as all the activities offered here is just amazing.

What advice would you give a freshman?

First of all, always go to Intervention it can really help you as you go through Sandburg. Build that strong foundation. Try activities that were not offered at your middle school and see what you like. Reach out to upperclassmen and build up new relationships. Take advantage of all that Sandburg offers.

Is there a specific teacher or sponsor that has inspired you?

Ms. Spooner (Mattera) has inspired me a lot. I love her personality. She always had a lot of fun in our class but I also learned so much. We enjoyed novels other classes did not like because of how she taught the material. She was very inspiring.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

Julie Heinlen - Fashion Club and Orchesis - @HeinzFACS

16 years at Sandburg - Teaching Fashion & Interior Design, Career Internship & Consumer Economics - Graduated from Illinois State University (Undergraduate) and Governors State University (Masters)

What is currently your favorite song? poem? book? artwork? TV show/series?

My favorite artist is Claude Monet. Some of my favorite music: Lady Gaga, Cold Play, Sam Hunt, Pink, Dave Matthews and anything 80's

What has been the "best" thing you have gotten out of working with your club and/or students?

The best part of fashion club is encouraging my students creativity and watching it develop. It's fun to share my love for fashion with others and observe students inspiring each other. Another great aspect of the club is bringing in guests from the fashion industry and the arts.

What is one thing that others may not know about you?

I studied Fashion & Interior Design in Paris and London my freshman year of college.

GIVING BACK
