Augusto Pinochet was born on November 25, 1915 in Valparaiso. Ever since he came of age, Pinochet always went to a military school. Throughout his adult years, he was promoted to some of the highest ranks in the Chilean army. On August 23, 1973, Chilean President Salvador Allende appointed Pinochet as Commander-in-chief of the Chilean army. During his reign, his regime arrested an estimated 130000 people. During 1976-1979, Chile had an economic boom after major reforms were made. In 1988, Pinochet held a plebiscite to determine whether he would stay in power or not. 55% voted no, 43% voted yes. He remained in power until democratic elections determined the next President. After stepping down in 1990, he remained Commander in Chief of the Chilean Army. Eventually, on a trip to London, Pinochet was arrested for his war crimes by the Spanish intelligence agencies. He later returned to Chile when a British judge determined he was too old to stand trial. Upon returning, a Chilean judge stripped him of his Presidential immunity, and he was set to go to trial again for money laundering. He died on December 10, 2006, before he could ever stand trial for his crimes.

Salvador Allende was the 30th President of Chile. He was the first Marxist elected head of state in an open election in Latin America. On September 11, 1973, Allende was overthrown in a US backed coup d'├ętat that allowed Pinochet to come to power. Accomplishments

"The Miracle of Chile"

When Pinochet took power, he implemented numerous economic reforms. Pinochet banned workers unions, privatized social security, and privatized state owned companies. Pinochet relied on the Chicago School of economics for his reforms. The Chilean economy soared, but so did inequality.

Themes

Pinochet is tied to three of the 8 Themes of World History. He is tied to revolution because he overthrew the Socialist President of Chile in a coup and took power with the backing of the United States. He is tied to economics because he drastically improved Chile's economy and their GDP, and followed the Chicago School of Economics. He is also tied to power and authority because he ruled as a cruel dictator who tortured political opponents, sometimes throwing them out of helicopters like in Operation Condor, and tried to exterminate leftism in Chile.
