Is-land Island Is-land is your land...

What dangers do you see as a person stranded on this deserted island? Be specific and explain your answers.

There could be many challenges that someone would face. From the dangerous animals to the lack of water, this island is a very dangerous place to especially without the right survival skills and resources. Some dangers some may see is the lack of resources like water, food, and shelter. It would also be difficult to keep warm or cool on the island because if you don't have the right type of clothing, than it would make things harder. Also, if you make a small mistake than it might turn into a bigger one that may cost someones life. If one doesn't communicate effectively with their group than everything would fall out of order. Its very important to follow the rules so that everyone is on the same page on things. Dangers come in different forms when someone is on the island. Be aware of your surroundings and make check that everything seems okay because if it isn't than someone may get hurt or a death may occur.

Create a list of characters from the novel The Lord of the Flies and add details about them using textual evidence from the novel

  • Rules
  • Travel in 2+
  • Don't go out at night
  • Share resources
  • Clean up after yourself
  • Communicate effectively
  • Do your job
  • Do not kill each other

I believe that the most important rule is to communicate effectively. I choose this because with out communication, everything would fall apart. If their group did NOT have good communication than nothing would be said. Also if they didn't have good communication than Ralph and his group would fight one another or end up killing each other. To survive you need good communication and be able to talk efficiently and get their ideas across.

One of the themes of this novel is survival. Explain why the setting of this story adds to or contributes to the theme.

Since one of the themes of this novel is survival i would think they would put the characters in a dangerous setting or place to where its difficult to survive. The setting of this story adds to the theme by giving the characters more obstacles and difficulties to overcome.

Ralph has said, “This is a good island” (Golding 35). Ralph’s pronouncement will prove ironic; it is definitely NOT a good island. What problems do readers already know about? Explain why these problems prove this is NOT a good island after all.

This island already caused one death and also has caused a lot of miscommunication between these boys. Because of this island they're going crazy. Its hard to actually find resources on this island and its also harder to not fight with each other. This island can really bring out the bad side of someone.

Symbols are physical things that represent abstract ideas. The following are some of the symbols from the novel The Lord of the Flies.

  1. Meat symbolizes the temptation the boys face on the island
  2. . Conch symbolizes law and order because without the conch it would be chaos
  3. Smoke symbolizes rescue the boys face on this island by signaling ships
  4. Painted faces symbolizes anonymity the boys face on this island by being anonymous
  5. Simon symbolizes goodness the boys face on this island by being clam and collective
  6. The island symbolizes isolation the boys face on this island by being alone
  7. The platform symbolizes democracy the boys face on this island by deciding on things and establishing them
  8. Piggy symbolizes civilization by being intellectual about things
  9. Piggy's glasses symbolize survival because that's how they make the fire

Describe the Beast that seems to be stalking the island. Use the text as backup for your info.

When Simon starts speaking about the beast, the boys start thinking that the beast is actually a ghost. "Someone spoke out of turn. 'Maybe he means that it's some sort of ghost'"(Golding 89). From what Percival's said the beast lives in the water "' He says that the beast comes out of the sea'"(Golding 88). At first this beast was a snake and now its some type of octopus animal or a ghost that comes out of the water to terrorize the kids. This beast overall has been many things because maybe its what the littleuns want to believe the beast looks like because they're scared of what it might really be.

Name at least two things the boys are doing or have given up that show how they are now operating on instinct and no longer trying to follow the rules of society. Explain your answers with information from the text.

The boys are not following certain rules of society which consist of to communicate effectively which they're not doing because they're repeatedly fighting. "The storm broke. 'Sit down!' 'Shut up!' 'Take the conch!' 'Sod you!' 'Shut up!' Ralph shouted"(Golding 89). Another rule they are now operating on instinct besides the rules of society is to not to kill each other. Yes, people do this in society but its not that typical for children to go around killing each other. They broke this rule by killing the boy with the mulberry birthmark. "' That little 'un-'" gasped PIggy-"'him with the mark on his face, i don't see him. Where is he know?'" "The crowd went as silent as death"(Golding 46).

Two rituals people are most familiar with are weddings and funerals. Pick an event (a wedding or a funeral). Make a list of at least 3 phrases people use at the event you picked. Using one of your phrases, explain why your phrase is helpful in the situation.

One thing that is said in this situation is "We are gathered here today" which is mainly stating what we are here to do and what were going to do. To acknowledge that we are about to celebrate a new beginning or life. This is helpful because it says that were about to do something that will change ones life. Another thing they say at weddings are "Dearly beloved" which means that you're speaking to someone who you love dearly or someone that is about to come together to celebrate another person who you considered to be beloved. This is helpful to the people who are considered family and beloved. Another thing they say at weddings are "If anyone here has any objections to this couple getting married, let them speak now or forever hold your peace." This is just stating that of anyone has a problem with this couple getting married please say so. Typically, people do not usually have a problem with who is getting married or coming together and celebrating this ritual. If one does, the members or family might be upset at the person that is objecting. This is just a something that the priest tells the people that this is about to happen and that if you do not agree please speak up. Because once you let these two get married, it cannot be undone right then and there. This is helpful because it gives a chance to people who may not agree.

Choose a character, either Ralph or Jack and explain the effect seeing the Beast has on the character you have chosen. Use textual information to support your answer.

Jack has always been somewhat confident of himself and his hunters and not scared of a lot of things. The effect of Jack seeing the beast is that he now knows that there is a beast. He is also sacrifices a pig head to the beast. He left Ralph's group so he can become a leader or his own. "'I'm going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when i do can come too'" (Golding 127). This gives us evidence now that jack has changed or have been affected by the beasts presence. Jack feels scared about the beast overall. "' I don't think we'd ever fight a thing that size, honestly, you know. We'd talk but we wouldn't fight a tiger. We'd hide. Even Jack 'ud hide'" "Jack still looked at the ground"(Golding 124). Jack also is giving a sacrifice to the beast so it wouldn't bother them. "' And about the beast. When we kill we'll leave some of the kill for it. Then it wont bother us, maybe"(Golding 133).

Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph.

Simon is portrayed as a Christ-like figure. Simon climbed up the mountain and there he finds a parachuter who they think the beast is. "Simon saw a humped thing suddenly sit up on the top and look down on him. Then the wind blew again and the figure lifted, bowed, and breathed foully at him" (Golding 146). Simon than goes back to where the platform is (where Jack and his hunters and other are) to tell them that there is no beast. Simon then goes into the middle of the horseshoe of people and they began to attack him (thinking he was the beast) and he crawls out to sea and dies. "Simon was crying out something about a dead man on the hill. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down on the rock, leapt onto the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. Simon's dead body moved out towards the open sea(Golding 152, 153, 154).

In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a person reflection of your own experience.

Being in a group can give someone a lot of support and comfort, but it also gives some people a lot of negative feedback about you that isn't really true. Being in a group has some perks, but it also means that one might would do anything to stay in the group. Also means that some people would do things that were against their morals or even beliefs so they could "fit in". A positive aspects to being in a group is that you get to be around people who are like you and that you're comfortable with. A negative aspect would be that you wouldn't take chances of meeting new people who are different from you. To meet new people means to get out of your group, go out and actually experience something new. Being a part of a group is good because inside that group you would feel comfortable and safe. Overall, groups can be good or bad and all that matters is what you feel and what you want.

Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?”

To have rules and agree is the total opposite of hunt and kill. I believe to have rules and agree is better than to hunt and kill. Because, when there is kids on a island its really important to be safe. When a whole group has rules and they agree its less likely for them to get hurt. Yet, most kids wouldn't want to have rules because they probably had rules back at home and would want to experience what it feels like to have no adults and especially no rules on this island. "'Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?'"(Golding 180). Piggy is exactly right because if you don't agree on the next move your group is going to take than it might cause conflict or someone to get injured. To have order between the boys may make them get along better and even though some may have different ideas they might be able to compromise and get things done. Then again, it probably would be hard for a group of kids.

Choose a picture and a quote from the book and add it to your blog. For the text (7-9 sentences), explain why you chose the picture and the caption to summarize your experience with the book.

"' I just think you'll get back all right.'"

In Golding's novel Lord of the flies, Simon tells Ralph that he would get back all right. This quotes sums up the novel by giving the reader a feeling of hope for the boys and knowing that they're still on the island and reassuring that they DO have a chance of getting back home. I choose this picture because it gives us a image of Simon and Ralph, loosing hope, looking out into the ocean and Simon saying "' You'll get back all right.'" Simon sadly doesn't get back but his predictions were right about Ralph getting back. Overall, i choose this because this is still a island and the main goal is for them to get rescued even though some don't want to get rescued. Hope is all these boys have at the moment and that is all they need for trying to survive this island. My experience with this book has been overall positive and i think that this is a perfect book for people who like survival books with deep meanings. Books like these remind me of puzzles because to be able to understand and finish these types of books require to read between the lines and understand the deeper meaning and what the author is trying to tell the reader by visualizing a image inside the readers brain. Even though Ralph had obstacles on this island his main goal is to get home which is what makes this a survival type of book and the quotes points back to the main goal of Ralph that he does have a chance to survive and go back home.

Today’s assignment requires you to write a letter to a student who will be in my class next year and this novel and your opinion about the following items. What did you think about the novel? Explain how you best enjoyed the novel: the British man, reading on your own, or me reading. The Adobe Spark Blog Any additional information you would like to include

Lord of the flies was a very detailed, informational novel. This book created a new experience for me by creating a image of survival and tragedy all in one book. I really liked this novel and all the pieces you had to find and put together just made this book even more enjoyable than it already is. I loved the British man reading it because it really kept me involved with the plot and it made me feel like i was actually on the island. I also enjoyed you reading it because you knew the right moments when to slow down or to go faster vs just reading all in one tone. I also liked how you told us there was foreshadowing and to keep an eye on on events to come. I overall really enjoyed this Adobe blog because it gave me an outlet to express my opinions towards this book. It also made me pay attention to detail even more and made me understand what was actually going on and why it happened in the novel. So in conclusion this novel was an experience i will never forget and i'm very glad i read it!
