Choose a character, either Ralph or Jack and explain the effect seeing the Beast has on the character you have chosen. Use textual information to support your answer.
Jack has always been somewhat confident of himself and his hunters and not scared of a lot of things. The effect of Jack seeing the beast is that he now knows that there is a beast. He is also sacrifices a pig head to the beast. He left Ralph's group so he can become a leader or his own. "'I'm going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when i do can come too'" (Golding 127). This gives us evidence now that jack has changed or have been affected by the beasts presence. Jack feels scared about the beast overall. "' I don't think we'd ever fight a thing that size, honestly, you know. We'd talk but we wouldn't fight a tiger. We'd hide. Even Jack 'ud hide'" "Jack still looked at the ground"(Golding 124). Jack also is giving a sacrifice to the beast so it wouldn't bother them. "' And about the beast. When we kill we'll leave some of the kill for it. Then it wont bother us, maybe"(Golding 133).
Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph.
Simon is portrayed as a Christ-like figure. Simon climbed up the mountain and there he finds a parachuter who they think the beast is. "Simon saw a humped thing suddenly sit up on the top and look down on him. Then the wind blew again and the figure lifted, bowed, and breathed foully at him" (Golding 146). Simon than goes back to where the platform is (where Jack and his hunters and other are) to tell them that there is no beast. Simon then goes into the middle of the horseshoe of people and they began to attack him (thinking he was the beast) and he crawls out to sea and dies. "Simon was crying out something about a dead man on the hill. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down on the rock, leapt onto the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. Simon's dead body moved out towards the open sea(Golding 152, 153, 154).
In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a person reflection of your own experience.
Being in a group can give someone a lot of support and comfort, but it also gives some people a lot of negative feedback about you that isn't really true. Being in a group has some perks, but it also means that one might would do anything to stay in the group. Also means that some people would do things that were against their morals or even beliefs so they could "fit in". A positive aspects to being in a group is that you get to be around people who are like you and that you're comfortable with. A negative aspect would be that you wouldn't take chances of meeting new people who are different from you. To meet new people means to get out of your group, go out and actually experience something new. Being a part of a group is good because inside that group you would feel comfortable and safe. Overall, groups can be good or bad and all that matters is what you feel and what you want.
