Education, Training, and Influences: Irving Penn attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art 1934 and studied drawing and painting.
Early Career: Penn worked as a designer before becoming an art director at a retail store called Saks Fifth Avenue. After one year at Saks Fifth, Penn leaves to travel the continent and paint pictures. He was asked to work for Vogue, where he would set up the layout of the magazine.
Late Career: Irving Penn's later career consisted of taking photos for Vogue magazine. He photographed covers, fashion photography, portraits and stills of abstract objects. Penn got his own photography studio where he'd take pictures for several famous people. He also photographed many indigenous peoples, African tribes, and animal skullls.
