The Internet Impacts on our society

"The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information dissemination, and a medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location."

The internet first started with a series of memos that were recorded through social interaction that could be enabled through networking. These memos were written by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT in August 1962 discussing his "galactic network", which was the idea of having a network of computers that could talk to each other. Shortly after, "packeting switching" was developed, which was a way of sending information from one computer to another in the form of blocks or packets. It wasn't until 1969 that ARPAnet delivered its message from a computer to computer. The network grew steadily but faced struggles with integrating to the "Internet".

It wasn't until the end of the 1970s when Vinson Cerf, a computer scientists solved the problem. He invented the "Transmission Control Protocol" or TCP, which allows all of the computers on all of the world's mini-networks to communicate with each other. This transformed the network into a worldwide network.

Then came the world wide web invented by Tim Berners-Less, a Switzerland computer programmer. He figured out how to change the worldwide network from just sending files to one another to a "web" or information and data that would allow anyone to have access to.

Since then the Internet has come a long way from Mosaic, which allowed users to search the web and see words and pictures on a page at the same time. Then came navigation through scrollbars and clickable links. Then the web was opened up for commercial use and that is when everyone was able to get on. After that came the invention of social media networking through sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

The Internet is bettering our society because it is improving our healthcare, education and our forms of communication with the media and through various social media app.

The Internet is effecting our healthcare because it improving operational efficiency and patient care. Through the Internet, doctors are able to make better and more informed decisions for their patients. They can provide faster test results and through the Internet, doctors can share more cases to help properly diagnose patients. The Internet has not only helped doctors become more efficient but it has also impacted their patients. Patients can now look up their symptoms and learn how they can better treat themselves to improve their quality of health. Overall, the Internet has helped find better treatments for people, which has improved the health of our society.

Have a question...? Google it!

The Internet has enhanced our ability to learn new things simply by the invention of Google. We now have Google to answer all of our unanswered questions. Through the Internet, we have online libraries with journals and databases that students have access to and can obtain anywhere. The Internet allows for collaborations between different students and an entirely new way of interacting with each other. At the University of Florida, there is a distant learning program for students to obtain an entire degree online. This is all made possible because of the Internet. Overall, the Internet has helped make great strides in our education systems and has allowed more people to gain more knowledge easier.

Worldwide Media

This is my brother sitting in the front seat awaiting take off on the UAA Carl Vinson.

The Internet has allowed worldwide communication with everyone who has access to it. There a social media apps that are mobile and users can have on their phone to gain instant access. In the news, we are allowed 24/7 news updates through the internet. For example, my brother is on the USS Vinson Carl serving the USA as an F-18 Fighter Jet Pilot. Through the incredible technology of the Internet, I have been able to communicate with him via email, when he is on the opposite side of the world. Through social media app, I have been able to see pictures of him, from when he goes to port and sometimes even receive a FaceTime from him. Being able to hear from your brother the day of when the news came out that his ship was changing course and going to North Korea instead of Australia is something I will never be able to forget. Every day I worry about his safety, but now ever more because he is the first one in if we go into attack with missiles. The Internet is something that can make this giant world seem small, but it has bettered our society because we are allowed constant communication and constant news access. Overall, the Internet has helped our society become more informed by allowing 24/7 access.

In conclusion, the Internet has contributed to huge advancements for our society. However, with such a huge amount of information at our fingertips, it instilled fear in our society in a way that we haven't seen before. People will research their symptoms and self-diagnose themselves with something dramatic like cancer. Kids in school systems will use these social media sites to bully other kids online or people will see national news and think that we are all going to die of a terrorist attack. With any advancement, there is always going to be a downfall but this technology has benefitted our society in more ways than it has hindered it. Technology is something that happens at a very rapid pace, so I am interested to see what is next for the Internet. What will be the next advancement that we will see with it? Possibly holograms? Who knows? We will just have to wait and see what happens next!
