Weekly Reflections December 2, 2016

Dear APH families,

Recently we had a wonderful retreat which focused on gratitude. Girls were invited to share with the community some of the wonderful things for which they are grateful. A new tradition was also presented! Thanks to Mrs. Billings' class, we are focusing on establishing a legacy of readers here at The Academy. Rather than the traditional gift swap, students will be gifting a book they believe will be enjoyed by their fellow classmate whose name they picked at random. It was a beautiful way to begin the Holiday Season.

The end of the first semester is quickly approaching! Please be sure to check MyAPH to see your student’s class requirements, as the format will vary by class. We will send more information in the coming week. If you have any trouble logging in, please contact fastorino@penguinhall.org.

Upcoming Events

Open House This Sunday!

We need your help. On Sunday, December 4th, from 2-4pm we will be having our final open house of the year. We are asking all students and families to bring a friend and share the event with others. Thank you in advance for helping to spread the word so that our school community continues to grow. Please bring a friend and tell a friend!

Grace Kelly to Visit APH

We are so excited to welcome Grace Kelly to APH this coming week. Grace is a saxophonist who is part of the band on the Stephen Colbert show. Additionally, she is a partner with She’s the First, an organization that provides scholarships to girls in low income countries to cultivate the next generation of global leaders. Grace will be speaking to our students and performing on Monday, December 5th.

Fall Theater Performance

On Friday December 9th, and Saturday December 10th , The Academy’s Drama club will present “Shakespeare’s Women.” The play will be held at St. John’s Prep in Danvers at the Ryken Center for the Arts. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Winter Concert

Everyone is invited to join us on Friday, December 16th when our choir will have our Winter Concert at the Gordon College Chapel. The concert will begin at 7pm. Donations will be accepted. We’ve been hearing them rehearse each week; you are in for a real treat.

A Capella Performances

Our a capella group has been invited to perform at two events this weekend. The first is the Tree Lighting Ceremony at Gordon College on Friday night.

The Tree Lighting from 5 to 7pm is FREE. Parents who have participating students should pick them up at 7pm. The 26th Christmas Gala begins at 7:30pm, and ticket information is available online.

The second event is The Symphony of Trees on Saturday night at the Hamilton-Wenham Community House on Saturday, December 3rd. The event runs from 6 to 10pm, but participating students need to be dropped off at 5pm. They can be picked up anytime after 6pm. We will be singing as guests arrive in the lobby before the show.

Holiday Giving

Wellspring House

From now through December 7th, APH will be a conducting a toy drive to benefit Wellspring House. Wellspring House is located in Gloucester, and provides shelter, homelessness prevention, career and educational planning, and job training for low income individuals in the area. While all toys are welcome, APH will be placing a special emphasis on teenage items such as sports equipment, makeup/hair/nail accessories, board games, books, and arts/crafts supplies.

3rd Annual Teddy Bear Drive for Boston Children's Hospital

in loving memory of Ella O’Donnell

We are collecting new, unwrapped stuffed animals for Boston Children's Hospital. This year after speaking to Erin O'Donnell, we have decided to dedicate the teddy bear drive in memory of Ella. Ella touched so many lives. She was a fighter and she never gave up. Please say a prayer for the O'Donnell family this holiday season and donate a teddy in memory of Ella.

We will be collecting from now until December 21st.

There are 375 beds in Children's all of which are full every Christmas. Our goal as always is to collect 375 stuffed animals to ensure that every child receives one for Christmas.

.......Until Every Child is Well

Winter Athletics

Our basketball and swim team started their season this week. The basketball team will be practicing at DIS in Danvers and the swimmers will be at the Sterling YMCA in Beverly. It is an exciting time to see the teams form; I can only imagine where we will be in years to come.

New Clubs

We are still waiting on completion of some of our facilities to be able to offer all the clubs the girls want. There are two new clubs that will begin, SAT prep club will be offered weekly during lunch. Mrs Cook and Mrs Calzini are the Advisors. Our goal is to put the students’ minds at ease before the test and teach them the tricks they need to know.

International Club will be meeting during lunch for all those who want to explore and celebrate other cultures and the possibility of traveling. Mrs. Block will announce meeting times.

There are so many great things happening here at The Academy. We appreciate your support and your patience as we try to develop programs with purpose and meaning. It is truly amazing to see how the girls continue to be engaged and excited. Campus guests continue to marvel at our community and the girls’ contagious spirits. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend.

Warm regards,

Julie Calzini
