What started as a rather uneventful match quickly turned into a dramatic event which saw the Ryerson Rams pull off a 2-1 victory over the Trent University Excalibur at Downsview Park on Sunday evening.

From the opening whistle, both teams seemed to be gridlocked at the centre of the field. Aggressive offensive efforts from the young Rams team clashed against the fortified defensive line-up of the Trent Excalibur, resulting in a minimal number of scoring attempts from either team. Heading into halftime tied at 0-0, both teams seemed determined to be the first one to open the scoring.

It would be Trent that would be able to claim this honour. At the 45th minute, Trent’s Kaitlyn Steffler (Bradford, Ont.) opened the scoring with a long distance goal from outside the goalkeepers' box. The previously melancholic atmosphere had given way to an aura of tenacity, as the Rams were now determined to turn this game around. With a renewed emphasis on offensive aggression, they were able to do exactly that, as the Rams' Soraya El-houni (Toronto, Ont.) provided the equalizer in the 73rd minute.

With confidence running high, the Rams continued to pursue the goal that would hopefully end their two-game losing skid. After a hard fought offensive pursuit into Trent’s territory, Tatiana Srbijanovic (Hamilton, Ont.) provided Ryerson with this game-clinching goal in the 86th minute.

“I think they showed they can step up and show that they want to score. It’s important to be able to step up, without losing composure,” said associate coach Tina Cook.
