Volunteering: no-one can do everything, but everyone can do something

An easy thing to say, but maybe not as easy to do, particularly with the busy lives we lead today. There are a range of benefits that come from volunteering – not only to the organisations that benefit from volunteers time and skills, but also to the volunteer themselves. Research shows that volunteering can:

• Give the volunteer a greater sense of wellbeing, from knowing that they are making a positive difference to their community

• Reduce stress from everyday life

• Gain confidence

• Meet new people and make new friends among like-minded volunteers and staff

• Gain new skills and experiences

You may feel that now is the time to give your time to benefit others, but you’re not sure how or what.

Looking to go the extra mile and help others in the Mendip area?

We are looking for volunteer drivers in Mendip. Can you help?

Volunteer drivers provide a crucial transport service for non-emergency NHS patients and social care users enabling them to get to various locations across the county and further afield. You could also help transport children to college or to school, providing a crucial service to a young person’s academic career.

Each journey connects people with services they would otherwise miss out on. As a volunteer driver, you would be providing a vital lifeline to people in your community.

This is a rewarding opportunity to provide a valuable, practical support for people within your community and your mileage expenses will be reimbursed at up to 50p per mile. You will also be supported by a Transporting Officer from Somerset County Council’s Transporting Somerset team.

Not only will you be helping the community, it’s an excellent way of meeting new people.

To find out more visit https://volunteering.somerset.gov.uk/or call 0300 1232224.

Mendip Business Awards Launching Soon

Organisations are being invited to enter the prestigious competition, now in its 6th year. The Mendip Business Awards are a unique opportunity to showcase local entrepreneurial talent, and our outstanding businesses across the Mendip district.

More than 200 people celebrated Mendip’s business talent in 2019. Why not join them? Entering is quick and easy, and you could be joining the very best in business at the Royal Bath and West Showground this summer.

Applications open on Monday 20th January and close on Friday 27th March, 2020. Find out more about the Mendip Business Awards, and enter here: https://www.mendipbusinessawards.co.uk/

YMCA Sleep Rough Challenge

Super 1s Cricket

Super 1s gives young people aged 12-25 with disabilities the chance to regularly play cricket. By creating community cricket hubs for young people to receive coaching, we give participants the chance to compete against peers and enjoy the benefits of sport and an active lifestyle.

For many young people with disabilities throughout the UK, opportunities to take part in regular competitive sport can be extremely limited. Super 1s provides these opportunities and helps young people to improve their physical and mental well-being while making friends and engaging with positive role models.

The programme aims to:

• develop the physical and mental well-being of players

• help players make friends and engage with positive role models

• provide an environment for competition amongst peers

How it helps young people

Super 1s provides young people with a chance to realise their potential, both on and off the pitch. It enables them to discover what they can do, not what they can't, and become role models for their peers.

Engaging in regular sport helps all young people develop personal skills, including confidence, leadership and independence. For young people with disabilities the opportunity to do this can be very limited.

Super 1s in Somerset

We have six Super 1 clubs running in Somerset

  • Bridgwater
  • Bath
  • Street
  • Taunton
  • Weston Super Mare
  • Yeovil

All sessions are free to attend and run from 6-7pm.

How to get involved

How are Stroud District Council responding to the Climate Emergency?

Cllr Simon Pickering (Chair of the Environment Committee at Stroud District Council) will be giving a talk on how Stroud are tackling the climate emergency, since their declaration in December 2018.

Cllr Pickering has driven Council policy and strategy development to help enable Stroud to become carbon neutral by 2030. In 2015, Cllr Pickering oversaw Stroud being named the first carbon-neutral district council in Europe.

Actions that have been achieved so far include:

  •  Appointing a Carbon Neutral 2030 Officer
  •  Community engagement via Transition Stroud
  •  Public, Charity & Business sector engagement via Local Strategic Partnership
  •  16 Parish councils also adopting the Climate Emergency
  •  Updating of Local Plan Policies

Join us for an inspiring talk on Stroud’s journey to carbon neutral and learn more about what we can do in Mendip.
