FREE College Tuition Amber Gish, APS Concurrent Enrollment Specialist
Concurrent Enrollment is a partnership between Aurora Public Schools and each of these institutions of higher education:
Pickens Technical College
Community College of Aurora
Metro State University Denver
According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees per year is $33,480 at private colleges, $9,650 for state residents at public colleges, and $24,930 for out-of-state residents attending public universities. That doesn't include transportation and text books.
Students can attend college classes on the high school campus or on the college campus and receive credit for high school and credit for college simultaneously. The tuition is paid for by Aurora Public Schools. They only have to purchase or rent their college textbooks.
We even have students complete their Associate Degree before receiving their high schools diploma! At least 12 students from APS are on track to receive their AA/AS degree this year before they graduate high school and the number increases each year as more students are aware of the opportunity.
AND...that's not the only opportunity! Students generally begin college classes as a junior, but any 9th-12th grade student can take college classes if they meet the required test scores for the class.
Students who have taken 12 or more college credits (equivalent to 4 or more college classes) before the end of their senior year in high school can be eligible to participate in the ASCENT program. The ASCENT program is a 1st year college experience paid for by Aurora Public Schools and textbooks are INCLUDED. Students in this program complete their high school graduation requirements and "walk" with their class but do not receive their high school diploma for another year while they are attending college full time for an entire year following their senior year in high school paid for by APS.
