The Power of Leadership Takes Flight

Topic: Transition and Change

Written by: Krista Tillman, Customer Processes & Systems Manager

“Change is inevitable. Progress is optional” I choose progress.

After accepting a new position as the Customer Processes & Systems Manager for AEP transitioning from my previous role as an IT manager. The main lesson I have learned through my own transition and change is that I do not know myself as well as I thought I did! I thought this was going to be easy.“ Just let go and move on, right?” I found it was not as easy for me as I expected it to be. With a few things in progress in my previous role and a list of ‘to-do’s’ that I hadn’t even started yet. Was my current vision for the future going to be lost?

Accomplishment is in my DNA. I am a goal-oriented and results focused person so my instinct was to finish what I started so I did not have to give my list to the new manager. After several weeks of trying to finish my to do list, my list was getting longer! I finally had to ask the new manager to help me transition. We met and made a plan of what I would finish and what they would take on.

In closing, in life though there is one thing that is a constant - Change! My inability to transition items in progress did not have anything to do with the capabilities of the incoming new manager or my trust for that person. What I found through self-exploration, was my authentic self and its need to drive for results. The uncomfortable seasons in life is where we grow the most and that is something to be excited about! I encourage us all to embrace change and use transitions as an opportunity to explore ourselves and grow from the experience.

A unique learning experience that's fun, educational and out of the box.

The event presented the impact of the individual on the group – we need to listen to understand. Saying “yes” does not mean you cannot say no, but rather that you are acknowledging the entirety of what the other person is trying to communicate to you, whether verbal or not, driving ideas and solutions, rather than misunderstandings.
