Happy 2020! I'd like to start with some 2020 vision jokes but will spare you and get right down to business.... Haley Snell-Sparapany, our registered dietitian, finished her master's degree and moved out of state. We will miss her fun but most importantly, her commitment to our students. The good news is that we welcomed Jessica Rorick, R.D., to our team. You can read more about Jessica below. She will begin seeing clients when she returns from maternity leave in late March. In the meantime, students can call our office at 765.496.1788 to schedule with our student nutrition coaches, thanks to a great academic partnership with the Department of Nutrition Sciences.

Two of our programs (Financial Wellness and Wellness Coaching) are frequently mentioned by Student Life's Steps to Leaps initiative. Please take a few moments to read about the expansion of both of those programs below as well as other upcoming programs. (Do you have kids who love Harry Potter? Welcome Jessica!

Jessica Rorick, R.D., joins us from the medical world, having worked in an outpatient specialist office with IU Health/Riley in Carmel before joining our team. She has extensive experience working with clients experiencing eating disorders and started a gender nutrition clinic, working with the transgender population. Outside of work, Jessica likes to travel, read, and not take anything too seriously. A Purdue graduate, she and her husband have a hobby farm with ducks, bees, berries, and a small orchard. They recently welcomed their son into the world and have begun their greatest adventure yet.

For students looking to get their financial future on the right track, Boiler Financial Track is offering a free two-part Beginners Budgeting series that will help them learn to manage income and expenses and plan for their financial future. Registration is limited however, there will be multiple sessions throughout the semester. Sign up online at Boiler Financial Track or at Member Services.

FREE WELLNESS COACHING

Our Wellness Coaching program has expanded from 15 clients the entire first year to 85 clients in fall 2019. Students can schedule one-on-one sessions to work on creating healthy lifestyle goals. Wellness Coaches are trained through the American Council on Exercise and are equipped to help students uncover strengths and values to make lasting changes. Students who want help with physical activity, time management, sleep, stress, and other wellness topics can visit the RecWell website.

FREE Coaching Prep course

RecWell is offering a Wellness Coaching Prep Course for students who want to take their health and wellness expertise to the next level. Completion of the prep course readies students for employment as a RecWell Wellness Coach and teaches them the essential skills of working one-on-one with clients to help reach health goals. The course begins March 3rd. Students interested in this professional development opportunity can register for the course by visiting the RecWell site.

Welcome Elaine!

Elaine Doyle is joining the Wellness team as the first Student Financial Educator working with Boiler Financial Track and will oversee student interns. She is a senior studying financial counseling with hopes to work with early childhood financial literacy in the future. Elaine is also a current Learn-to-Swim instructor in Aquatics. Youth Cooking Clinics

Learn how fun and easy cooking can be! We’re putting a unique twist on family meals—Kids are cooking and parents are relaxing! Throughout the semester, the kids will learn how to prepare and serve cultural inspired dishes. Your child will learn how to make delicious recipes in a hands-on, safe and fun environment, and taste everything along the way. Plus, all of the classes teach basic culinary skills, food safety information, and how to make healthy food choices.

5-8 year olds: 10-11a.m.

9-12 year olds: 11:30-12:30p.m.

Wizarding World

Kids will get to experience the magic of cooking making Shepard's Hand Pies, Cheese and Pretzel “Brooms” and Butterbeer Cupcakes!

Breakfast Club

Welcome to the club! Kids can join us in making Parfaits with Homemade Granola, Breakfast Tacos, and Sheet Pan Pancakes.

March 7th

Vary Your Veggies

Let’s turnip the beet! Kids will make Build Your Own Grain Bowls, Green Smoothies, and Peanut Butter Cookies with Zucchini and Carrots.

FREE Mindfulness Series

The always popular four-part Mindfulness Series begins on Feb. 11 at 5pm. Students will be trained on how to manage stress, practice self-awareness, meditation, yoga, and mindful eating. Register soon for this favorite before time and space runs out! For more information, visit the RecWell site or call the RecWell Member Services desk at 765.494.3109.

Recovery Ally Training

The Recovery Ally training offers education on how to support Boilermakers with substance use disorders. This instruction offers you the opportunity to learn how you can support students through recovery. You will discover how to recognize warning signs for a student that may need help, resources on campus, and the information on how to make a referral. Training dates are February 26th, March 25th, and April 8th from 12 – 1 pm in the Wellness Conference room in the CoRec. You can sign up to attend here. We encourage you to bring your lunch and explore how we best support students in recovery and set them up for success.

Substance Free Community

Do you know a student that would like to engage in fun activities such as cooking demonstrations, game nights, working out or having a movie night? We have the perfect group for them. Our substance free community is an array of students from across campus that are interested in living a life with little or no alcohol.
