Expectations based on gender In regency Era By: Cha Cha Gwa

Men were supposed to come from a wealthy and affluent family. They also have to have a lot of dough and money. Women on the other hand, has to also come from an affluent family and have a network and connections. They also have to be beautiful, draw well, dance well, play the piano, sew, cook and etc..... Women are treated with no respect at all if they come from a poor or maybe some middle class. If they don't have connection and own anything at all, they might not get married at all.

It's not about love, it's more about reputation and going up to the class ladder. Elizabeth friend Charlotte marry Mr. Collins. Charlotte didn't like Mr.Collins but she marry because she feel like it's the right thing to do. She'll not be suffering and her parents won't worry about her anymore. She's also marry into a rich and affluent family. She thinks that she'll like Mr.Collins as they live together and fall in love with him. She thinks she makes the right choice. It's also hard to marry someone so I think that Charlotte made a choice to marry Mr.Collins.

In this Era, there weren't a lot of men and women were interested in every men that come to town because they lacked men and are desired to get marry. The role of women in this era is to get marry to a rich and affluent men to get a good reputation and support their family. Women were like property. They have no say. If their parents say they're marrying the person they have to marry or else they get thrown out of their house and they're looked down upon. Women don't choose who they love their parents choose for them. In this book, it's the opposite.

Elizabeth is from a middle class and Darcy, he's loaded with money. Elizabeth didn't like Darcy at first because she thought that he was too proud of himself and he wouldn't dance with him. The statement that Darcy made was " she is tolerable but not handsome enough to tempt me." That's where all the miscommunication and misunderstanding happen. Wickham also said some bad things about Darcy and she thinks that she's right in making a decision that indeed, Darcy is a bad person. Since there was someone agreeing with what she's thinking, she thinks that Darcy is just a rich and a snobby person.Darcy is a good, sensible man but Elizabeth thinks not. I really like their interactions with each other. They're suitable. Elizabeth is intelligent and quick-witted. Maybe that's why Darcy likes her. Darcy has been treated with respect and now there's a woman who's contradicting the way he should act and he wants to know more about Elizabeth. Ms. Bingley likes Darcy and treat him like he's special but not Lizzy. Lizzy keeps on making bad remarks about Mr. Darcy. He got interested in her because well she's different. I feel that they're polar opposite of each other. Lizzy is too quick to judge but she also is a sensible person but not when it comes to Darcy.

Lydia and Wickham eloped but how did they eloped? Well with Darcy's money. It's the dowry. Elizabeth's family cannot afford to let all the 5 daughters marry and they don't have enough money to pay for the dowry. So Darcy helped him and go and run away when she still likes you. So I feel that marriage is a big issue in the expectations on the gender. Darcy is the one that helped everyone but Elizabeth didn't notice that until the end. Darcy's too good for her. When she finds out about the incident she's shocked but I feel that Darcy likes her. Darcy really loves her so he would do everything to make her family and friends happy. Darcy has a lot of dough and have money so he can do that.

It's also so rare to have a woman like Elizabeth in this Era. What people called "accomplished woman" is "A woman must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing, all the modern languages, to deserve the word; and besides all this, she must possess a certain something in her air and manner of walking, the tone of her voice, her address and expressions, or the word will be but half deserved.”

Quoted by Ms. Bingley being jealous because Darcy's attention is going towards Elizabeth. She doesn't want to get involved with other social structure unless they have the same structure. For woman like her, of course she's accomplished woman because she's rich and has a lot of money. Elizabeth, on the other hand, she's a middle class, she's not poor or rich. She has 4 sisters. Ms. Bingley doesn't want to associate with her. The only reason she's interacting with her is because her brother likes Jane. Ms. Bingley mind soon change because she finds out that Darcy is interested in Elizabeth. So, Elizabeth become the road block for Jane and Mr. Bingley. The reason why they can't get marry because of lizzy.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
