MAROON MADE Volume 1, Issue 19 Jan. 29-Feb. 4 Recap and looking ahead

Taylor Lake was big again offensively for the Maroons, netting 15 points in a win over Emory and then 25 more in UChicago's victory over Rochester.

IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT

The #12 UChicago women's basketball team pushed its win streak to 16, topping Emory and Rochester for the second-straight weekend to extend its lead in the UAA title race to three games with five to play.

  • Junior forward Olariche Obi had a huge game, totaling 21 points and 18 rebounds and sophomores Taylor Lake (15 points) and Mia Farrell (12 points) chipped in double-figure scoring to help keep the Maroons (16-2, 7-0) in sole possession of first place in the UAA..
UChicago hasn't lost since November and now stand 18-2 overall.

#16 UChicago 80, #11 Rochester 70

  • Taylor Lake finished with 25 points on 9 of 14 shooting, to go with seven rebounds.
  • Mia Farrell scored 16 points. Ola Obi racked up her 11th double-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Miranda Burt tallied 11 points of her own.

TRACK & FIELD

Robin Peter and Alex Scott put up big marks at the Maroons' Windy City Rumble meet to earn UAA Athlete of the Week honors.
Alex Scott threw a career-best shot put throw of 15.70 meters -- the second best indoor toss in school history and a mark that ranks 18th in all of NCAA Division III.

CONFERENCE TOP THROW

Sophomore Alexander Scott threw the best shot put mark of his career to lead the Maroon men in a second-place finish at Saturday's Windy City Rumble. The distance of 15.70 meters leads the UAA and stands 18th in all of NCAA Division III.

Senior Nathan Downey captured the pole vault event Saturday at the Windy City Rumble by clearing a mark of 4.56 meters.
Sophomore Robin Peter's winning 60-meter hurdles time of 8.90 seconds at the Windy City Rumble marked the fifth-best time in all NCAA Division III and earned her UAA Athlete of the Week honors.

ANOTHER TEAM TITLE

The #11 UChicago women's track and field team put together another strong performance last weekend to capture its third team win of the season.

  • Pentathlon – Laura Darcey, 3,270 points
  • 5,000 meters – Lucy Kenig-Ziesler, 19:05.49

  • Long jump – Mary Martin, 5.26m
  • Pole vault – Isabel Garon, 3.31m
Sophomore Mary Martin won the long jump event and placed second in both the 60 and 200 meters.
Lucy Kenig-Ziesler took home top honors in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:05.49.

WRESTLING

First-year Will Hare came out on top in his heavyweight match to help the Maroons come back to beat Augustana in the final tuneup before this week's UAA Championships.

LAST PREP BEFORE THE 'SHIPS

With a short lineup and an 18-0 early deficit, the Maroon wrestling team came back to win five of six matches to defeat Augustana in the team's final dual before Saturday's UAA Championships held at Ratner Athletics Center.

Chaise Hauck won his 149-pound match in a 7-2 decision at Augustana.
Senior Nick Ferraro won at 174 with a pin at the 6:07 mark.

TENNIS

Senior Luke Tsai earned his first UAA Athlete of the Week honor of the season after recording a shutout win over his Hope opponent at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Estefania Navarro and Justin Lee both helped the Maroons to a perfect day in Saturday's 9-0 wins over Hope.

SWEEP CITY

The #9 UChicago men's and women's tennis teams didn't drop a SET in identical 9-0 wins over Hope College last week to continue the Maroons' strong start to the season.

Senior Peter Leung won at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Jake Fenlon helped the Maroons bounce back from a tough loss against Emory Friday with 25 points in Sunday's win over Rochester, which gave UChicago its first series sweep over the Yellow Jackets since the 2014-15 season.

BOUNCING BACK

The Maroons fell to Emory by five points on Friday and then responded with a big-time win over Rochester Sunday to complete the first series sweep over the Yellow Jackets since the 2014-15 season.

Senior Collin Barthel had a big day in the Maroons' win over Rochester, netting 22 points and hitting 3-of-5 shots from behind the arc.

UChicago 90, Rochester 83

  • Senior guard Jake Fenlon – a native of Rochester, N.Y. – heated up in the second half to finish with a team-high 25 points.
  • Classmate Collin Barthel had one of his best shooting performances of the season with 22 points, hitting 3-of-5 from behind the arc.
Noah Karras led the Maroons with 17 points in UChicago's 66-61 setback to Emory Friday.

  • Noah Karras led the way with 17 points.
  • Collin Barthel tallied 11 points and nine rebounds.
  • Sophomore point guard Jordan Baum contributed eight points and six assists.

SWIMMING & DIVING

Sophomore Agnes Lo captured her FOURTH UAA Diver of the Week honor after a strong showing at a highly competitive Illinois-Chicago Diving Invitational last weekend.

LO LEADS THE WAY

Sophomore Agnes Lo put together a strong showing at Illinois-Chicago's Diving Invitational in a competition filled with NCAA Division I competitors.

NEXT MEET:

Feb. 14-17: UChicago Swimming & Diving at UAA Championships at Emory (Atlanta, Ga.)

  • In the 3-meter event, Lo placed second with 253.45 points just behind UIC's Cyndey Liebenberg (295.45), and also placed in the Top 10 in the 1-meter dive with her fifth-place finish (260.65 points).
  • Maroons junior Anna Girlich placed 11th (221.80) and 12th (210.70), respectively, in the 1-meter and 3-meter event, and senior teammate Natalie DeMuro took 10th in the 3-meter (211.30) and 14th in the 1-meter (207.10).
  • On the men's side, first-year Joseph Zhao placed seventh in the 1-meter (248.05) and eighth in the 3-meter event (218.55) to round out UChicago's competitors.
Anna Girlich placed 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 1-meter and 3-meter events at UIC.
