RECAP: Javelina Homecoming Week 2019

Javelina Homecoming Week took place Oct. 21st-26th and was host to several events for students and alumni to enjoy.

Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony

Nearly 200 alumni and friends of Texas A&M University-Kingsville attended the Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony on Oct. 25th. The event took place on campus in the MSUB Ballrooms, giving the audience an opportunity to dine with and hear from the newest honorees. A silent auction was also held during the event.

Homecoming Parade

The Homecoming Parade was held in downtown Kingsville on Thursday, Oct. 24th.

1st Place: Enrollment Management

2nd Place: Javelina Alumni Association

3rd Place: Catholic Student Organization

1969 National Football Championship Team Returns to Campus for Reunion

Javelina Alumni of the 1969 National Football Championship Team returned to the university during Homecoming Week in celebration of their 50th Reunion. The weekend's events involved a private lunch at the John E. Conner Museum on Friday, Oct. 25th, and the team was recognized Saturday, Oct. 26th, on the field at Javelina Stadium during the Homecoming football game!

Members of the 1969 National Football Championship Team who attended the reunion were: Phelan Allee, Andy Browder, Jim Brown, Bryan Drake, Henry Glenn, Floyd Goodwin, David Hopkins, John Jackson, Roger Jarvis, Allen Kaiser, Larry Krueger, Gene Kubelka, Michael Lowe, Al Matthews, Charles Matula, Jim Respondek, Mike Roley, Al Shuford, Butch Truehart, Guile Vela and Robert Young.

Engineering Hall of Fame Ceremony

The Engineering Hall of Fame Ceremony took place the morning of Oct. 25th at the Salazar Building in Kingsville. Theresa Chang '81 and Randall A. Odom '57 were honored as the newest inductees into the Engineering Hall of Fame.

President's Brunch and The Javelina Society Induction Ceremony

The morning of Oct. 26th, over 150 guests attended the 2019 President's Brunch. The newest inductees to The Javelina Society were recognized and the event closed with remarks from President Mark A. Hussey, who gave an update on the university.

Homecoming Tailgate and Football Game

The afternoon and evening of Oct. 26th gave alumni and friends of the university a chance to tailgate before the football game. The Javelina Alumni Association hosted a cornhole tournament as well as a cook-off for alumni to participate in, and free food and giveaways were provided at the alumni tailgate tent.

During the Homecoming Game, Distinguished Alumna (ret.) Col. Lisa Carrington Firmin was able to fire Old Smokey after the playing of the National Anthem!

Robert Justus Kleberg Sr. Bloomberg Classroom Unveiled

The new Robert Justus Kleberg Sr. Bloomberg Classroom was unveiled in the College of Business Administration at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Funding for the new classroom came in the form of a $75,000 donation by Kleberg Bank.

A classroom on the second floor of the Business Administration Building was converted to accommodate the lab. It opened for student use in spring 2019.

The Bloomberg Essentials terminals that are housed in the lab provide users with an introduction to the Bloomberg Professional Service. The terminals can be used as an educational and research tool in undergraduate classes, community workshops and financial literacy education.

Soil Judging Team Earns Fourth Place Finish at Regional Competition

The Texas A&M University-Kingsville Soil Judging Team received fourth place honors at this year’s Region IV Collegiate Soils Contest, hosted by the University of Arkansas.

Faculty Spotlight

The late Dr. Drewey “Wayne” Gunn, Professor Emeritus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, left a tremendous gift to the university – his estate, estimated at $1.3 million, given entirely in honor of Dr. Gunn’s parents, Josephine “Jo” and Bruce Gunn. This gift will directly impact the Veterinary Technology program at the university. Learn more in the full press release linked below.

American Electric Power Foundation Gifts $100,000 Grant to College of Engineering
