What is the Forestry Industry?

The Forest Industry is one of the main industries in Canada. It involves three sub-sectors: Solid wood product manufacturing, pulp and paper product manufacturing, and forest and logging. Canada has the second biggest forestry industry in the world, behind Sweden.

What are some of the problems with the Industry?

After a problematic decade in the industry, many workers are ready to retire. An issue with that is there may not be enough new workers to take the jobs of the retired. Another issue relating to the industry is the mountain pine beetle in B.C and the effect on the industry it is having. The industry had to increase the annual allowable cut just to remove all of the beetle-infested wood. They also lost potential profit with the beetle-infested wood because they could not use or export that wood. One issue that will definitely affect the future of the industry is how we are cutting down trees that are 100+ years old. They do replant the trees but it takes a very long time to become the same age and quality of the trees they are cutting down currently.
